Dining with Diabetes is a cooking and nutrition education program designed for people with diabetes and their family members or caregivers. In a series of four classes on Thursdays, January 8, 15, 22, 29 at 12:00pm EST, we will help you learn healthy techniques to use in your own kitchen. An anti-inflammatory diet may help reduce chronic inflammation — a prolonged response to how your body handles danger. Chronic inflammation can damage your heart, brain and other organs. And it plays a role in nearly every major illness, including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and depression. So, how can the foods you eat contribute to how you feel? Join the Extension Office on Wednesday, January 21 at 3:00p.m. at the South Granville Public Library to learn more about anti-inflammatory diets, how to reduce inflammation and separate myths from facts.

Over the past few months, we have been preparing our home for visitors, whether for the holidays or the upcoming Super Bowl. Part of preparing for visitors is cleaning your house. The cleaning products you use can end up in the environment, whether they’re used outside, rinsed down the drain or evaporated into the air. Some ingredients used in cleaning products can impact the environment. Join the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Person County Center on Thursday, January 22 at 10:00 a.m. to learn the difference between cleaning and sanitizing, which cleaners are effective, and how to make your own green cleaning recipes. Green cleaning is a great way to reduce VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the home and save some money! Sign in to your aarp.org account or create a free account to register for events. AIM High
Each Tuesday, Jessica Rice Hawkins of AIM High Fitness, works with students at the Oxford Housing Authority running a nutrition, reading and exercise program. Jessica and I have worked together since August working with students to help them improve their eating habits. During December, we teamed up to present nutrition education resources to the students. One student in particular has made the decision to increase her fruit and vegetable intake and was even able to eat a fruit salad. When I first met this student, she stated that she only wanted chicken nuggets and candy.

Ripe For Revival
On December 16th, 2025, the Ripe for Revival Mobile market in Butner held a health fair, recipe preparation and market. A big shoutout to Commissioner Mark Griffin and Council member Ed Sosa for joining us.

Operation Spring Plant
On December 5th, I presented at Operation Spring Plant which was hosted by Olusayna, LLC with representatives from the USDA and NCDA and other participants from across the country. We talked about our local food system, the Farm to Fridge program, and the Oxford Armory Farmers Market.

Oxford Armory Farmers’ Market
The Oxford Armory Farmers Market board met on December 15th to discuss the upcoming market season. We have signed a memorandum of understanding with the City of Oxford and will begin the 2026 season at the beginning of May and go until the last Saturday of October. Applications are open for market vendors at this time and will begin accepting applications in January of 2026. Scale recertification will be April 1, 2026 from 11 AM until 1:30 PM in order to be able to participate in the market. Scales must be certified by the NCDA.

2026 NC Small Ruminant Educational Series
There will be a series of educational programs for small ruminant producers. It will be a hybrid series (webinar and in-person). Registration is required. There will be a $15 registration fee for the in-person meetings. A meal will be included with the in-person registration. There is no charge for the Zoom registration. Topics include:

Urinary Calculi and Coccidia Management: March 3
Biosecurity: April 30

Pasture and Cattle Field Day
Join us for the field day “Leveraging Technology to Improve Pastures and Cattle Performance”, which will be held Wednesday, February 11, 2026, from noon to 4 pm at the Butner Beef Cattle Field Lab located at 8800 Cassam Rd. in Bahama, NC.
There will be four field stations plus updates on research activities highlighting the topics of introducing clovers in tall fescue pastures, using UAVs for improving pastures, precision feeding, supplementation to increase fertility, and heifer development and selection (see attached flyer). Speakers include Felipe Silva, Matt Poore, Benjamin Rajo, Johnny Rogers, Seth Nagy, and myself.

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Granville County Center, will host an opportunity for pesticide applicators to complete their annually required respirator fit test on January 22, beginning at 9:00 a.m., at the Granville County Extension Office, located at 125 Oxford Loop Road, Oxford, NC 27565. To ensure an efficient and orderly process, participants must register in advance for a 20- minute appointment time slot. Participants are encouraged to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment to complete all necessary paperwork.
To register, please contact Johnny at 919-603-1350 no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20.
