2026 Livestock Judging Team Interest Meeting


Join us for an interest meeting for the 2026 Buncombe County Livestock Judging Program! This meeting is for both adults and youth interested in learning more about the program and planning to participate in 2026.


In this program, youth participate in 3 main activities:

Livestock Judging: Livestock judging is a process of evaluating, selecting, placing, and learning about the various livestock species–beef cattle, sheep, goats and swine.

Skillathon: Identification, evaluation and judging of tools, feeds, breeds, meats, hay and wool of various livestock species–beef cattle, sheep, goats and swine.

Quizbowl: Game show style competition to test general livestock knowledge of beef cattle, sheep, goats and swine

2026 WNC Dairy Steer Project


Entering the 12th year of the program, we are now accepting applications for the 2026 WNC Dairy Steer Project! The WNC Dairy Beef Feeder Steer Program is designed to introduce youth to livestock showing, feeding, and care. Participants in the program will be provided a dairy calf that they will feed and care for at their home or another approved facility from March through the 2026 Mountain State Fair when the calves are sold. 2026 Blue Ridge Brooders 4-H Pullet Project


This program is designed for youth ages 5-18 in Buncombe and Henderson counties who are interested in raising and showing chicks. This project gives youth the opportunity to:

  • Raise 5 chicks from 2 days old until approximately 4 months old (laying hen breeds)
  • Participate in training workshops to learn about chick care, husbandry, general health, housing, handling, and showmanship skills.
  • Show your chickens with other program participants in the final Blue Ridge Brooders 4-H Pullet Project Show.

4-H Inclement Weather Policy


Buncombe County 4-H follows the Buncombe County Schools inclement weather decisions

  • If school is cancelled, there are also no 4-H events that day
  • If school is delayed or dismissed early, decisions on 4-H meetings will be communicated via email, text and our Facebook page


Buncombe County 4-H Needs You!


Buncombe County 4-H is currently seeking passionate adult volunteers to assist in implementing the following 4-H programs: STEM & Electricity, Cooking and Sewing classes. The time commitment is flexible with your schedule and you will be making a lasting positive impact on kids in your community!


Volunteers are the key to success in the Buncombe County 4-H program. Whether you’re interested in starting a club and becoming a club leader or just have a few hours to invest, we have challenging and fun jobs for adults who want to make a difference in the lives of Buncombe County youth!
