🥚🐔 Think your flock has egg-cellent eggs? Put them to the test!

Registration is now open for the 2026 4-H Egg-cellent Egg Contest! Youth with laying hens can showcase their flock by submitting up to two half-dozen entries to be judged on both exterior and interior egg quality.


📅 Registration Deadline: July 31, 2026
🐣 Open to active 4-H members with laying hens
💻 Includes two required Zoom trainings and age-appropriate project activities


Whether you're new to poultry or a seasoned chicken enthusiast, this is a fun way to learn more about egg quality while building your poultry knowledge and skills.

The N.C. Cooperative Extension, Halifax County Center, is here to help! We offer professional gauge testing completely free of charge.

  • What to bring: You don't need to haul your entire unit—just bring in your canner lid with the dial gauge attached.

  • Compatible Brands: Our master gauge can test the accuracy of National, Magic Seal, Maid of Honor, and Presto brands.

    • Note: We cannot test All American canner gauges at this time.

Summer Green Bean Salad


1 pound (3 cups) green beans, washed & trimmed

1 pint cherry tomatoes, cut in half

2 ears corn, cooked and cut off the cob

4 oz. (1/3 cup) feta or ricotta cheese

3 Tbsp. sherry vinegar

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

4 Tablespoon olive oil 

1 cup packed basil leaves, cut into thin ribbons

salt to taste


1. Cook the green beans in salted water until just done. Chill well. 

2. In a large bowl, combine the cherry tomatoes, corn and green beans.

3. Add cheese to the vegetable mixture.

4. Make the vinaigrette by combining the vinegar and mustard then add the oil. Mix in a jar and shake until combined. 

5. Add the dressing to the vegetable mixture. 

6. Top with the basil.

7. Salt to taste.

CHROME Regional Ag Expo

CHROME is scheduled for August 27th at 9AM at eh Peanut Belt Research Station in Lewiston. We look forward to seeing you there. Registration will be opening soon so hold the date and a registration link will be available in the next newsletter.

Cotton and Soybean Scouting School

We have a Cotton and Soybean Scouting School scheduled for July 23rd at 10AM at the Halifax Ag Center. We will have a classroom section and a hands on section in the field. To register visit our website
