Welcome to our New Horticulture Agent!!

Ridgely Jackson is the newest addition to the Halifax County Extension Office. She is serving as the Horticulture agent for Halifax, Northampton, and Edgecombe counties. Ridgely recently graduated from Clemson University with a degree in horticulture and minors in biology and
sustainability. She has experience in four different public and private botanical gardens as well as with commercial scale composting. Her interests include sustainable landscape design,
ethnobotany, and continuing to learn about plants and what they have to offer. We are excited to have Ridgely on our team!

Safe Plates for Food Safety Managers Class Cancelled

We have had to cancel our August Safe Plates class. If you have any interest in attending please be sure to register for our November meeting in Halifax.

CHROME Regional Ag Expo

CHROME is scheduled for August 27th at 9AM at the Peanut Belt Research Station in Lewiston. We look forward to seeing you there. Registration is open and available at the link below.

Be on the Look-out for Yellow-legged Hornets!

The NCDA&CS has confirmed the first established presence of the invasive yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) in the state, in Matthews.

USDA-AMP Funded Program Opportunity

Are you a farmer interested in implementing conservation practices on your farm?  This program is available for full funding and technical assistance to implement conservation practices such as planting cover crops, developing prescribed grazing plans, reducing tillage, planting trees, and even the construction of fences, high tunnels, and livestock shelters as well as technical assistance and up to $15,000 per farmer for business development and marketing activities such as designing a new website, purchasing post-harvest handling equipment, and sales software and hardware.

Cover Crop Program for Farmers

Farmers for Soil Health is a 20-state program committed to advancing soil health practices, such as planting cover crops, to support environmental outcomes and on-farm profitability. The program is offering a $35 per acre for cover crops planted. For more information and eligibility requirements visit the link below.

Agriculture and Pesticides

All pesticide license holders need to attend this new class before their recertification date. More classes will be available this fall. Use the LEARN MORE button below to keep up with all important class dates as available.

Winter Cover Cropping for Livestock

Hay may be in short supply this winter. Learn about the cool season forage options you can plant for winter and spring grazing. We will also discuss cover crop varieties that work in Nash County. This meeting is open to all livestock and crop producers!

Seed Libraries

Thanks to the  Halifax County Master Gardener volunteers for partnering with us on getting FREE seeds to the community. You can find a seed display in ALL 5 HCLS locations which includes Halifax, Enfield Memorial Library, Littleton Library, Scotland Neck Memorial Library and Weldon Memorial Library.

Halifax County Harvest Days Vendor Registration Open

We are seeking food vendors, and local artists for our 34th Annual Harvest Days Festival.  Don't miss the early bird registration discount!

Halifax Homemade and Harvested Exhibits

New this year to Halifax County Harvest Days is a canning and field crop contest. Participants are eligible to submit canned goods from this year and harvested crops from this year into a contest to be judged and placed based on quality. The judged products will be on display for all to view at the event. More information on how to register will be available on the website soon, but start planning now!
