Double-crop soybeans aim to boost profitability. NC State Extension trials found that fewer inputs improve profits. Treating double-crop soybeans like full-season soybeans reduced quality and profits, but some inputs were better than none in omission trials supported by North Carolina Soybean Producers Association.

Central Region Shooting Sports Tournament
On Saturday, August 15th, our Troubleshooters 4-H Club competed in the Central Region 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament! A total of 420 youth competing at Millstone in 95 temps!
Throughout the day, our youth competed individually and as teams across 13 different disciplines!
Following a great day of competition, several of our Troubleshooters will be heading to the State 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament to represent Iredell County!

Hunter Walker — Junior Muzzleloading & Junior Telescopic Rifle
Junior Recurve Archery Team — Garrison, Adilyn, Elyse, Abby & Majesty

It’s that time of year again! Our annual countywide 4-H Meat Raffle fundraiser has officially started!
4-H clubs and members will be selling raffle tickets now through October 22. With three chances to win, you don’t want to miss out!

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased with cash or check only. Looking to grab your tickets? 4-H clubs will be selling tickets at the fair every night, or you can reach out to a specific 4-H club or member to purchase tickets throughout the fundraiser.

Decoding the Fine Print: The Homeowner's Guide to Using Pesticides Safely and Effectively
Dealing with a pest invasion—whether it’s armyworms marching across your lawn, aphids suffocating your prize roses, ants staging a coup in your kitchen or crabgrass infiltrating your turfgrass—can test any homeowner’s patience. In a moment of frustration, it is tempting to grab a bottle, bypass the dense block of text on the back, and start spraying.
However, pesticides are not just standard household cleaners. They are powerful chemicals designed to mitigate, repel, or destroy living organisms. When used correctly, they are precision tools. When used incorrectly, they can become a hazard to your family, your pets, and the local ecosystem.
Here is what you need to know about navigating pesticide use safely, and the very real risks of cutting corners.

1. The Golden Rule: THE LABEL IS THE LAW - The instructions are a legally binding blueprint designed to maximize efficacy while minimizing danger. If a label says a product is for turfgrass only, applying it to your vegetable garden is illegal—and dangerous. Always read and understand the Signal Words of CAUTION, WARNING, and DANGER.
2. How to Correctly Utilize Pesticides - safe applications require being proactive rather than reactive. Be sure and identify pests correctly in order to buy and apply ONLY what you need.
3. The consequences of ignoring the label include phytotoxicity (Burning your plants), chemical drift and volatilization, environmental and pollinator devastation, and health risks to humans and pets.
Pesticides should be viewed as a last resort or as part of a larger strategy called Integrated Pest Management (IPM) which encourages the use of non-chemical cultural practices before turning to a chemical solution. |
