| Extension Partner Events |

Step back in time at the Early America Living History Fair on Saturday, September 12, from 10:00am – 2:00pm at the Person County Museum of History, 309 N. Main St., Roxboro, NC. This FREE, family-friendly community event co-hosted with the Person County Museum of History will be to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary. It will feature 50+ historical demonstrations and interactive experiences throughout the museum campus, including colonial music, traditional crafts, hands-on activities and more. Guests can pick up an event passport and collect stamps as they explore for opportunities to win prizes.
Food and refreshments will also be available throughout the day:
Wildflower Café - coffee truck set up
Butcher’s Daughter – food available for purchase
Crispy Gyoza – food truck on site
Volunteers are needed! We are looking for community members to help throughout the event. This is also a great volunteer opportunity for students who need service hours.

The NC Cooperative Extension Service is partnering with the Person County Recycling Center for their annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, September 26 from 9:00am - 12:00pm at the Person County DSS Parking Lot from 355 S. Madison Blvd. This event provides Person County residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous material at no cost. Part of that event will be to collect farm waste such as pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and 5-gallon containers or smaller. If you are a farmer who has large amounts of pesticides to dispose of, please contact the Extension Office at 336-599-1195 ahead of the event so we can make appropriate plans with the NC Department of Agriculture.

4-H Fun Run |
|
Join us for a 4-H 5K and Fun Run at The Land at Hawkins Loop on Saturday, November 14 with the run starting at 9:00am. Proceeds will support Person County 4-H! This event is part of our annual Farm City Week celebration. We plan to have a fun run, farmers market vendors and agricultural booths, along with food and beverages available for purchase. Be sure to save the date!! Registration will be opening soon. |

Poultry Judging Contest |
|
We are looking for youth ages 8-18 years old who are interested in improving their poultry skills and take part in the Poultry Judging Contest and Clinic. It will be held on Tuesday, November 10 from 9:00am - 4:00pm at the NC A&T University Farm Pavilion in Greensboro, NC. You can register for this free event as a team or individually! There will be one more opportunity for NCDA private pesticide applicators to receive 2 hours of ‘V’ certification on Tuesday, September 8 at 6:00pm at the Person County Office Building. No registration is required. |

Liberty Tree to be Planted |
 |
|
|
The Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Granville and Person County are planting a ‘Liberty Tree’ at the Person County History Museum at the Early America Living History Fair on Saturday, September 12 at 12:00pm to honor our nation’s 250th birthday. The tree to be planted is an Ironwood/Musclewood/Hornbeam Tree (Carpinus caroliniana). This is a native tree that can be found as an understory tree or on a woods edge and reaches approximately 25 ft tall and wide. The very hard wood from this tree was used to make tools such as axe handles and ox yokes. |

Join the efforts of others on Saturday, September 19 from 8:00am – 12:00pm for the Person County Fall Litter Sweep. Volunteers can meet at Roxboro City Hall, 105 S. Lamar Street at 8:00am for registration where they will be given bags to collect the trash and then you can go to any road in Person County from where you wish to clean up the litter and leave the bags on the shoulder of the road to be picked up. This is a great opportunity to help make Person County an even better place than it already is to live and enjoy. |

NC State Fair Forage Contest |
 |
|
The North Carolina State Fair is just around the corner, so consider entering hay in the Forage contest. Benefits include having a forage analysis for ration balancing and marketing, having the hay displayed in a high visibility area for the duration of the State Fair, possibility of winning the $50 first prize and bragging rights for the next year. The entry process is easy. A forage sample is taken and sent to the NCDA lab before Tuesday, September 15. The cost is $10, which is the only entry fee. State fair entry has to be completed online by September 15. A 6" block of hay also has to be submitted to the fairgrounds for display before 10:00am Wednesday, October 14. Call the Extension office for more details or assistance with submitting an entry. |

4-H Feather Classic |
 |
|
|
The 4-H Feather Classic Poultry Show project provides registered youth with 3-day old chicks. The youth raise and care for these birds until show day, which will be held on Saturday, September 26 at 10:00am at Hyco Warehouse, located at 1965 Durham Rd in Roxboro. The project is for youth ages 5-18, from Caswell, Durham, Orange and Person counties. This is a great livestock introductory project as you don’t need a lot of space for birds. It also teaches these youth husbandry and patience. Come out on September 26 to support these youth and their poultry projects. |

Join us for a regional Forage Field Day on Wednesday, September 30, from 9:00am - 12:00pm at the Durham County Farm Campus, located at 308 Orange Factory Rd, Durham NC. Participants will learn management strategies to help you get the most of your forage system. Topics include pasture evaluation and renovation (including point and step method), nitrates and prussic acid, as well as strategies for future drought periods. Registration is required and can be done online. There is a cost of $5.

September Forage Tips |

Here are some forage tips from NC State Extension.
-
Fertilize and lime cool-season grasses.
-
Plant cool-season legumes such as ladino, sod clover, and alfalfa into tall fescue sods. Use insecticide.
-
Keep the grazing pressure on the summer grasses and completely use them before grazing cool-season forages.
-
Watch for fall insects (armyworms, grasshoppers, crickets) on established and seedling stands of forages.

Plant winter annuals on prepared seedbed for earliest fall grazing. No-till planting can be successful, but will not usually be ready to graze as soon after planting as on prepared seedbed.
-
Overseed or no-till winter annual legumes or grasses onto summer perennial grass after they have been closely grazed. Planting early may require that herbicides be used to suppress the existing grass growth.
-
Make a winter feed supply inventory so deficiencies can be avoided now (by purchasing hay or planting more winter pasture).

The October Cattlemen’s meetings will be combined for both Person and Granville Counties. We will have a very special speaker that evening. The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at 6:30 pm at the Person County Office Building Auditorium, located at 304 S. Morgan Street. Details will be sent out later but wanted to provide the date so you could mark your calendars and plan to attend. |

Participants will receive information on how you can purchase and make healthy meals for your entire family, while maintaining your budget. Join us for a relaxed, practical cooking workshop on Tuesday, September 22 at 12:00pm, designed to make whole grains an easy, delicious part of your daily routine. Learn simple batch-cooking tricks, flavor-packed recipes sized just right for one or two people, and quick ways to boost your heart and digestive health without the fuss. There is a $5 registration fee due to Room 123 in the Extension Office by September 18.

The NC Cooperative Extension - Franklin County Center will host the 2026 Pre-Plant Small Grains Meeting on Tuesday, September 22 at 6:00pm, at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Office Annex, located at 103 S. Bickett Blvd. in Louisburg. Topics will include pre-plant fertilizer, nitrogen management, weed control, disease management and more! 2 hours of N, O, D, and X NCDA&CS pesticide recertification credit will be offered. Be sure to visit the Person County Farmers Market this Saturday, September 5 from 8:00am - 12:00pm at Heritage, a Gathering Place, located at 4431 Durham Road in Roxboro, to celebrate all of the delicious local foods that will be available! There will be fresh produce, meat, honey, crafters, along with live music, a food truck, and the Person County Animal Services will be on hand with adoptable pets. |
