Alexander Central High School Animal Science classes participated in a Beef Quality Assurance
class led by Allison Brown, County Extension Director for Alexander County Cooperative Extension. Students in JD Sink's Animal Science classes learned about the beef cattle industry and why proper herd management is so important. Participants were able to practice giving subcutaneous and intramuscular shots and applying an ear tag in a classroom setting before going out to a farm for real life application. Students operated the head gate, removed fly tags, replaced hard to read identification tags, gave two vaccines, and dewormed cattle. Many of the students had never been around cattle before, much less gave them a vaccine. To finish
up the BQA certification process, the students completed a 20 question test to achieve their certification. 51 students earned their BQA Certification while gaining a new appreciation for the work that farmers and ranchers do each day.
