NC Farmers of the Foothills Networking Meeting

Looking to reach new markets? Would you like to see more of your fresh, local produce or meats being enjoyed in the region where it is grown?
The NC Farmers of the Foothills, initiated in 2020, is an alliance of farmers looking to pool resources and market their goods to the community.

The NC Farmers of the Foothills will be meeting on Monday, January 17, 6 p.m. at the McDowell Senior Center, 100 Spaulding Road, Marion.

Good Earth Gardening: A Garden Symposium Part I

The Master Gardeners of McDowell County have been working hard organizing Good Earth Gardening: A Garden Symposium. Good Earth Gardening will be Saturday, March 12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the McDowell Senior Center, 100 Spaulding Road, Marion.  Learn more about the Craig LeHoullier, a tomato expert, in Part 1 of this series.

Get Started Composting

Composting is harnessing the power of nature to recycle your organic waste at home. More than 25% of the typical home’s waste is yard trimmings and food scraps. Imagine cutting down the amount of trash you take to the dump by 25%.

4-H Livestock Judging Interest Meeting

You may be asking yourself...What is livestock judging? Why should I attend this meeting and what are the benefits of this youth livestock program?

First off, participation in this 4-H program not only gives youth the opportunity to learn about livestock production, but it also allows them to compete in knowledge-based contests. Not to mention, develop valuable life skills.

With the start of a new year, many of us make resolutions or set goals to try and change behaviors or our lifestyle. This year, I have been thinking a lot about food waste and want to incorporate ways to decrease the food that I end up throwing out due to poor planning on my part.

4-H Project Books and State 4-H Scholarships

With 2021 coming to a close, it is now time to reflect on our past year and the projects you have completed. Project books are due by February 15, 2022.


It is also time for our graduating seniors to apply for the state 4-H scholarships.

McDowell 4-H County Council

Before the pandemic hit, we had just restarted our McDowell 4-H County Council. We are planning to start again. County Council is open to all 4-H’ers in McDowell County. This group helps plan county events and serves as an advisory board. This is a great opportunity for youth to get more involved and serve in leadership roles.
