Small Grains Field Day Makes Impacts
The Northeast Ag Expo Small Grains Field Day was held on February 16th at Whitehat Seed Farm in Hertford. Extension staff from Camden, Currituck, Chowan, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties work together to hold this event annually to support the wheat farmers of the region. Attendance totaled 116 people, representing 97,975 acres of cropland. Topics discussed included wheat grain marketing, disease, weed, and nitrogen management. Surveys collected at the event participants revealed a $569,855 value.
4-H Youth Development
Camden Welcomes New 4-H Agent
Camden County Cooperative Extension is proud to introduce Angie Brickhouse as the newest member of their staff. Angie will be serving as Camden’s 4-H & Youth Development Agent. In this role, she will oversee the Camden County 4-H program which offers 4-H Clubs; School Enrichment; Teen Leadership Programs; At-Risk Youth Programming; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Programming; 4-H Camps and much more.

While Angie, a Salisbury NC native, is new to Cooperative Extension she is no stranger to youth education, having served over 17 years as a NC Public School system teacher. Directly before joining the Camden team, she was the STEM and Career Academy teacher for Chowan Middle School. Holding degrees in Outdoor Experiential Education from Appalachian State and Teaching from Lenoir Rhyne University, Angie is well versed in both formal and informal education.

Austin Brown, Camden County Extension Director, stated "I am excited to have Angie join our Camden County Extension team in this role. I am confident that her skills set will position the Camden County 4-H program for growth and positive impacts for Camden youth."

In regards to her new position, Angie states "Working with kids has always been my passion. I love watching them get excited when they learn something new. I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity!"

Youth Serve at the Food Bank
Youth from our FOCUS group participated in a community service project at the Food Bank of the Albemarle by helping pack 241 boxes of food for local citizens.
Teen Court Going Strong
Camden County Teen Court is in full swing and has heard their first two court cases with Judge Barnes officiating. Teen court provides a hands-on learning experience for student volunteers to be part of our justice system. It also provides an alternative system of justice where juvenile offenders are given the option to plead their case before a jury of trained peer volunteers who can provide constructive sentencing.
Family & Consumer Sciences
New Year’s Fitness Challenge is a Wrap!
The New Year’s Challenge came to a close this month. With 44% of participants completing each week's check-ins. These check-ins provided accountability for those who registered to reach their fitness goals. One participant noted that due to their participation in the program they are receiving better sleep and have an improved mood.
Monthly Live Food Demonstrations
