Tri-County Chick to Chick Program Starts This Week!
Join us this Tuesday, March 1st at 5:30pm (at Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine - 15 Hemlock Ave, Spruce Pine, NC 28777) for an interest meeting for our 2022 Tri-County Small Animal Program.
Does your child enjoy working with animals? If so, the Tri-County Chick to Chicken Program is an excellent opportunity for youth to learn more about raising and showing chickens through a hands-on experience! In this four month program, youth receive two chicks and raise them until the final event of showing them in the Avery County Fair and WNC Mountain State Fair. During the program, youth will attend one workshop per month where they will bring their chickens and work with them, learning how to care for and show them.

Tri-County Small Animal Program Starts This Week!
Join us this Thursday, March 3rd at 5:30pm (at Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine - 15 Hemlock Ave, Spruce Pine, NC 28777) for an interest meeting for our 2022 Tri-County Small Animal Program.
Does your child love animals but you don’t have a large area for them at your home? If so, the Tri-County Small Animal Program is an excellent opportunity for youth to learn more about raising, caring for, and showing rabbits and/or guinea pigs through a hands-on experience! In this program, youth receive a rabbit or guinea pig and raise them until the final event of showing them in the Avery County Fair. During the program, youth will attend one workshop per month where they will bring their animal and work with them, learning how to care for and show them.

2022 4-H Open House
Join us on Saturday, March 12th from 9-11am at the new Burnsville Fire Department (305 Pineola St, Burnsville, NC 28714) for our 2022 Yancey County 4-H Open House. Explore all of the clubs, workshops, summer programs and other opportunities available to youth in Yancey County! Youth can meet club leaders and sign up for clubs and find their fit in Yancey County 4-H!

Spring EYFP Classes Start this Month!
Calling all families with middle schoolers! Join us for our spring classes of EYFP!
The Empowering Youth and Families Program is a unique and fun program for families with middle school youth. This FREE program provides families with fun learning opportunities which aim to help strengthen family relationships.
The program is free for all participants and includes:
- a free meal for the family each week
- childcare for those outside of the program age range
- new games sent home weekly
- a weekend at one of our 4-H camps
- training and hands-on involvement in Community Action Planning
Classes begin Tuesday, March 15th at 5:30pm. Consistent attendance is required for 8 weeks.

2022 Small Farms Week
In celebration of Small Farms Week, Yancey County Cooperative Extension will be hosting TWO exciting activities!
1. Small Farms Week Poster Contest
Youth ages 5-18 are invited to participate in our 2022 Small Farms Week Poster Contest. This year’s topic is “Why are small farms important?”. Prizes will be awarded to the top three posters from each age category (5-7, 8-12, 13-18). Click the link below for contest rules and more information. Completed posters are due by 5:00pm on March 17th!
2. Small Farms Week Canned Food Drive
HELP US BRING A MEAL TO LOCAL FAMILIES! Our goal is to provide ONE complete meal to at least TEN families! To help ensure that we have all the ingredients necessary for a complete meal, see the list of wanted ingredients on the link below. Other shelf stable items are appreciated and welcome! We are collecting now through March 18th. Please drop off your donations here: 30 East US Hwy 19 E Bypass, Burnsville, NC 28714 A donation box will be available inside the interior door of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Office.

West District 4-H Teen Retreat
4-H West District Teen Retreat is a time for 4-H’ers to connect with other teens in WNC by attending workshops, participating in District elections, and having general fun together! It will take place Saturday, March 19th from 9am-6pm at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly Conference Center in Black Mountain.
Registration is open for youth ages 13-18. The Retreat will include 4 rotating workshops, a dance, two meals and a long sleeve t-shirt. Registration fees will be covered by Yancey County 4-H. Youth must notify Jordan if they wish to participate by Friday, March 4th at 4:00pm.

Longshots Open Enrollment Closes March 25th!
Our Yancey County 4-H Longshots Club is now accepting new club members! Club open enrollment is open until March 25th. After this date, no new members will be accepted in 2022. Longshots offers the disciplines of rifle, shotgun and archery. Click the link below for more information, or contact Jordan!
Make sure you mark your calendars for the required n ew shooter orientation on Saturday, March 26th. This is required for all youth who have never participated in Longshots before.

Yancey County 4-H Sheep & Goat Opportunities
Join us on Thursday, March 3rd at 5:30pm at the Yancey County Senior Center for our next 4-H Sheep and Goat meeting. This program is open to any youth, ages 8-18 that is interested in learning how to raise and show sheep and goats. Owning and showing animals is not required to be a part of the club.

Yancey County 4-H Swine Opportunities
Join us on March 15th at 5:30pm at the Yancey County Senior Center for our next Swine meeting. For the 2022 4-H Swine Project, youth receive two pigs, a feeder, and parts to construct a waterer. Participants will learn how to raise and show swine. This is a terminal project, youth will participate in a show and sale at the end of the program and youth get to keep their show premiums.
