CAMDEN EXTENSION CONNECTIONS
MARCH 2022 RECAP

Agriculture
Extension Connects Citizens to Agriculture Labs
We assist people throughout the year with sending samples to an array of state agricultural laboratories, based on client needs and analysis needed. Types of samples include soil samples, samples for nematode, crop tissue samples, agricultural water solution samples, and forage & feed samples.

This time of year we assist a volume of residents with soil sampling as they prepare their gardens, lawns, and fields for the upcoming growing season. Results from a properly collected, representative soil sample gives insight to the pH and nutrients in soil. This information is used to make fertilizer and lime recommendations, optimizing growing conditions. Starting on April 1st the state soil lab does not charge a fee for this service for all N.C. residents until Thanksgiving. Soil sampling kits are available at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Office.

4-H Youth Development
5th Grade Force & Motion
Fifth graders at Camden Intermediate School wrapped up their Force and Motion unit with a hands-on learning experience, led by Camden 4-H Agent Angie Brickhouse, in which they constructed balloon powered lego cars. Students were divided into groups where they applied the design process and the scientific method to develop the car that they thought would travel the farthest. 128 participants excitedly applied the physics concepts that they had learned in Mrs. Wynkoop and Mrs. Copeland’s classes for a fun-filled two days!
Camp Cale Fun Day
24 students participated in Camp Cale Day on March 14th where they enjoyed rock wall climbing, team building activities, archery and more!
Family & Consumer Sciences
EMFV Program graduated two volunteers!
On March 14, 2022, Sherry Bedsole from Currituck County and April Valentine from Chowan County were presented with their signature black aprons from Veronica Martin-Dowdy a 2020 pre-pandemic graduate. These volunteers have completed 30 hours of training and still have 20 hours of shadowing left to be completed prior to becoming Certified Extension Master Food Volunteers. This volunteer training offered in Northeastern NC is a combined effort of Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, and Chowan counties. Volunteers are able to serve in any of these counties.
