N.C. Cooperative Extension-McDowell County Center’s Keep McDowell Beautiful program will be coordinating the annual Lake James Clean Up on Saturday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to noon. We would like to invite everyone to remove litter from Lake James and its shoreline. Volunteers with boats, canoes, kayaks, and on foot will be needed to help.
Assistance available for farmers in McDowell due to TS Fred. The program will cover losses of crops, feed, livestock, aquaculture, and farm infrastructure. The agricultural commodities must have been planted but not harvested, or for aquaculture commodities raised on or before August 17, 2021. Deadline April 15. Learn more>>
It’s a Spring Fling Plant Sale
The Master Gardeners of McDowell County will hold their 2nd Annual Spring Fling Plant Sale on Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Historic Marion Tailgate Market, West Henderson Street, Marion.

Not All Bugs Are Bad It's the time of year when plants are coming out of dormancy, but also bugs will be more prevalent as temperatures rise. At the Extension office, we receive many calls about bugs, and the vast majority of insects that people are worried about are NOT bad.
Members of the McDowell County 4-H livestock judging team competed in three contests in March with great success. Despite not being able to field a full team at the contests, our team members still brought home numerous individual awards.

On Saturday, March 19, McDowell 4-H Shooting Sports program (The Young Guns) competed at the annual North Carolina Wildlife Hunter Education tournament at Catawba Valley Wildlife Club in Vale. McDowell had a junior (6-8 grade) team and senior (9-12 grade) team.
It's warming up, and summer is right around the corner. Think about fun summer days and nights...canoeing, archery, campfires, skits. 4-H Residential Summer Camp is always one of the most memorable events of the summer.

This position has the opportunity to increase agricultural awareness & develop the skills of McDowell youth.
