After a long COVID hiatus, the McDowell County Cattlemen’s Association will hold a meeting and cook-out on Thursday, May 19, 6 p.m. at the McDowell Agricultural Center, Inc., 188 Ag Services Drive, Marion. This will be a time to reconnect with old friends and gain some new ones. If you are new to the organization or community, please join us.

Not everyone has the time, energy, or interest to grow a garden, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying a fresh, vine ripe tomato. McDowell County is fortunate to have farmers that will grow fresh fruits and vegetables, tend to livestock, and harvest honey.
N.C. Cooperative Extension-McDowell County Center’s Keep McDowell Beautiful program will be coordinating the annual Lake James Clean Up on Saturday, May 7, 2022, from 8 a.m. to noon. We would like to invite everyone to remove litter from Lake James and its shoreline.

May Is National Salsa Month May has been declared National Salsa Month! Salsa is usually a tomato based recipe with onions, peppers and spices mixed in. But, any fresh fruit or vegetable can be turned into salsa. It doesn’t have to be spicy to be considered a salsa. Many recipes use fresh fruits as a refreshing change in taste.
As our growing season begins, we will be partnering with Haywood and Buncombe Counties to have food preservation classes. This year we are planning to have some virtual and in-person, hands-on canning classes.
We all know college is NOT cheap. College is a commitment for both you and your pocketbook. To help ease the pain, the Master Gardener℠ Volunteer Association of McDowell County offers a scholarship to McDowell County residents or students who have attended McDowell County schools.
It is once again time to gear up for 4-H Presentations. Presentations are a educational presentation on any topic that a 4-Her chooses. Presentations will be given at West District 4-H District Activity Day held at AB Tech Community College in Asheville on June 25th.

This position will develop educational programs that primarily serves the Livestock & Field Crops program areas. This position has the opportunity to increase agricultural awareness & develop the skills of McDowell youth.
NC State University and N.C. A&T State University work in tandem, along with federal, state and local governments, to form a strategic partnership called N.C. Cooperative Extension.
