It isn't too late to get involved and improve your public speaking skills or become more confident when you have to give a speech???

4-H Presentations
are a huge part of North Carolina 4-H. It is one of the most successful ways to help a young person learn how to do a public speech. It focuses on members teaching others what they know about a particular project/subject matter. They are sometimes called demonstrations or illustrated talk or a formal speech.

Presentation participants will compete at District Activity Day on Saturday, June 18 in Harnett County.

If you are interested please contact the Alexander County 4-H Center at 828-632-3125 immediately.

April's Round-up
On Saturday, April 23, 2022 the Alexander 4-H WHEP team competed in the state competition at Jordan Lake Educational State Forest.  Team members were:  Weston Brown, Emma Millsaps, Jacob Miller and Allie Millsaps.  The team prepared for months and did an awesome.  We are looking forward to going back next year to compete to win.
On Wednesday, April 20, 2022 Alexander County 4-H held a Intro to Wood Carving Workshop.   Alvin Woody and Darlene Tarlton shared their carving talents with the participants and taught them some basics of how to carve.  Participants started by learning a little about the history and process of wood carving, as well as seeing some of the instructors amazing work. From there participants transitioned to starting their first carving of soap. Everyone was able to pick a different pattern to try and carve. Below are some pictures from the event:
Spring Fling

Alexander County 4-H participated in Alexander County Partnership for Children's Spring Fling event on Thursday, April 7, 2022.  DJ Salyer, 4-H Agent and Cari Mitchell, Horticulture Agent handed out goodie bags that included a garden calendar, a nature scavenger hunt, and birdseed. Participants used items found during the scavenger hunt paired with the birdseed to create their own bird feeder to observe wildlife at home.

Pictured to the left is DJ Salyer, 4-H Agent with some participants that came through during the event.

Change to Embryology Program

Due to the looming Avian Influenza we were unable to allow our second grade classes to hatch eggs in the classrooms so we switched it up.  This year our classes will be hatching painted lady butterflies in their rooms that they can then release into the wild. The process will still give youth the chance to learn about the life cycle, but in a different way. The entire process will take three to four weeks and we will post updates via our Facebook page.

4-H in the News

Alexander 4-H Livestock Club
met on Monday, April, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Alexander County Service Center.  The educational meeting was on the poultry industry and backyard chickens.  They also dyed eggs together as a group.  The club will be taking a break for the summer, they will meet again on Monday, August 1st.
Boots and Breeches 4-H Club met Sunday,May 1, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Foothills Equestrian Center, 531 Starnes Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681.  The educational topic for their meeting was on preparing for a horse show.  The club plans to hold a practice horse show on Saturday, June 11, 2022.  New members are welcome to attend!

4-H Garden Club met in April and dyed Easter eggs! They did not use any artificial dyes that you can find most anywhere around Easter time, but instead, they used natural plant materials to dye their eggs! They learned about the history of using plants and natural materials to dye things like clothing, masks, baskets, pottery, and how they were even used for face and animal paint during times of war and celebration. Our youth learned about what kinds of colors are produced from plants and where they come from within the plant itself! This was a great experiment and all their eggs turned out BEAUTIFULLY! I would go even further as to say they are even prettier than most artificial colors. Here are a few pictures from our meeting!

Shockers 4-H Club met at the Caldwell Community College Lineman facility during their April meeting.  They toured their new indoor facility where they have classrooms and an indoor pole training area.  The students demonstrated pole climbing techniques and the equipment they use.  They also learned about the electrical devices that they install on the poles to bring electricity into the buildings. Please plan to join them for their next meeting on Tuesday, May 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the Alexander County Service Center.

Southern Grace 4-H Club
met on April, 21st to practice quilling.  This skill is taking narrow paper strips that have been rolled, shaped, and then arranged to make designs.  They made different types of flowers, that may turn into Mother's Day cards.  The next club meeting will be held May 19th at 5:00p.m.
Whisk it Up 4-H Club will meet Thursday, May 26 at the N.C. Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center.  The group will be making smoothies just in time for those hot summer months.
