Agriculture
Control Bagworms in Late May and Early June
Have you noticed cone-shaped bags, like the one pictured here, hanging from your conifer trees? We often receive calls at the Extension office in late summer and early fall regarding bagworms, a common landscape pest that feeds on many of the most common ornamental plant species. By that point it is too late to control them aside from physically removing the bags. Now is the time to control bagworms. Learn more here: go.ncsu.edu/readext?867191



Pest Alerts assist with Proactive Management
Throughout the year Austin delivers pest alerts to Camden County Farmers for pests that are problematic for the crops we grow. Often these pests are spotted in other areas of the state and alerts serve as an aid for proactive pest management. Recently farmers were alerted about scouting for kudzu bugs in soybeans. 4-H Youth Development
4-H Achievement Program
4-H club participants and leaders were recognized for their hard work and commitment. Reaching for the Stars, Focus, and Teen Court participants received awards at the ceremony.
Ecosystems
Camden Intermediate School’s 5th graders participated in a class that focused on
the role of different organisms in an ecosystem. They examined the relationships between prey
and predator, producers and consumers, as well as the impact that human behavior can play in their survival.
Teen Court Participants Recognized
Twelve (12)Teen Court student volunteers were recognized at the Camden Early College Underclassmen Awards Night.
Outdoor Fun
Sixteen (16) FOCUS students met weekly for interpersonal skill building. 8 students participated in fishing at Treasure Point and 5 students participated in bike riding/hiking at Dismal Swamp State Park.
Chemistry School Enrichment
Ms. Durham’s (Camden Middle School) 8th grade science classes participated in a
hands-on chemistry lab focusing on chemical and physical reactions. They explored the
interactions of different substances how to identify and differentiate the two types of
reactions.
Genetics School Enrichment
Ms. Drake’s (Camden Middle School) 7th grade science classes examined the role that
genetics play in the development of all living things. They learned to identify how they inherited
particular physical traits from their parents and how to classify these genes as dominant or
recessive.
Family & Consumer Sciences
In-Person Food Preservation Series
The second class in the in-person Food Preservation series was held on May 26th. Participants made Sweet and Dill pickles. Then participants demonstrated proper water bath canning methods. First ServSafe Class!
Olivia was recently certified to be a ServSafe Instructor and Proctor. She along with the agent in Chowan County held the first in a series of ServSafe Courses. The first course was held May 4th through the 6th in Currituck County. Participants completed a 14 hours course which helps them to pass the ServSafe Certification Exam. In compliance with the Food Code,  Managers must complete an accredited food safety course and pass a food safety exam. The ServSafe Certification Course and Exam will be offered again July 18 - 20th in Chowan County. For more information or to register visit:
