Every month, Homegrown shares new videos featuring tips and tools from our Extension experts in three categories: In The Garden, In The Kitchen and On The Farm. We'll introduce you to what's raised and grown in North Carolina, and the farmers that help feed us. We'll show you what plants are in season and how to get a bumper crop from your home garden. We'll take you into the kitchen to learn how to safely prepare nutritious meals.
 
New Family and Consumer Science Agent in Cherokee County
We are excited to announce that Marlana Baker has joined our staff as the Family and Consumer Science Agent. Today, June 1st, 2022 is Marlana's first day.  She is a graduate of Western Carolina University in the Pre-Health Profession. Her areas of responsibility include
food safety, healthy homes, local foods, and family resources management.








Butterflies Have Emerged at Two Local Schools
Second-grade students at Andrews Elementary School and Murphy Elementary School participated in the 4-H school enrichment curriculum, Winged Wonders. All seven classes received one Painted Lady Butterfly kit per classroom.
Second grade students learn about life cycles and were excited to be hatching butterflies. The students observed the larva then transferred the chrysalis’ to the butterfly habitat. Each classroom received: 5 live painted lady caterpillars with food, a butterfly habitat, easy-to-follow instructions, fun activities for elementary-aged students, and a 24 x 24″ poster.

2023 Farm School

A SERIES OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR FARMERS, HOMEOWNERS, GARDENERS AND YOUTH.

Cherokee and Graham County Centers have teamed together to offer a series of Farm School educational programs that will help farmers, homeowners, gardeners and youth learn more about farming, agriculture and rural living in our area. Most workshops are free to anyone who would like to register. However, there is a charge for the grafting workshop to help cover the cost of the materials. If you have any questions about our programs, feel free to contact us.

Register Now for the West District Horsemanship Clinic


June 20-22 in Fletcher, NC will be some of the best days for area 4-H horse club members. June 20th is the start of the West District 4-H Horsemanship Clinic. Participating youth with get professional instruction in their horse riding discipline of their choice for the first two days and then on Wednesday we will have a full day of fun. Youth will get to test their riding skills in the arena with cattle, learning the basic of cattle sorting with Justin Gillespie and they can see how their horse will handle obstacles while getting pointers by our special clinicians for a day Jackie Turnbull and Trent Rhea and they can see how they handle their horse doing a dressage test with a dressage clinician.

Cherokee County 4-H Club Meeting Days!!




We currently have four active 4-H Clubs here in Cherokee County. All of our clubs are open to youth ages 5-18 except for our Cherokee on the Fly 4-H Club. It is open to grades 6-12. Check out the meeting dates and enroll in one of our great 4-H clubs here in Cherokee County. Youth do not have to have animals or know how to tie fly’s in order to join our clubs. All of our 4-H clubs are free to enroll in.

1st Graders Explore the Busy World of Bees!!!
All four first grade classes at Murphy Elementary school participated in the 4-H school enrichment program, Busy World of Bees. Students in Mrs. Stonecypher’s, Mrs. Wood’s, Mrs. Flowers’, and Mrs. Savugot’s classrooms completed 7 lessons on honey bees and other pollinators. Arleene Ward, Cherokee County Extension Master Gardener℠ and 4-H School Enrichment Volunteer, taught the program to the first graders. Arleene is a retired teacher and does a great job teaching the curriculum to the students.

If you have never created a family profile in the 4-H Online system and you would like to participate in North Carolina 4-H this year, we ask that you take a few minutes and create your account. The information in this article provides guidance on the 4-H Online enrollment / re-enrollment process.

This information request is for Cherokee County, NC citizens only. If you are not a Cherokee County citizen and need assistance visit,  cherokee.ces.ncsu.edu and locate the county center for your area. Please allow 3-5 days for a response. Onsite visits are very limited from February 15 until May 15 and September 15 until October 30 because of classes being taught virtually and in-person. Resident/landowner can also be located in a Google Drive Folder. Search the entire NC State Extension database by visiting cherokee.ces.ncsu.edu and typing the keyword in the search bar located in the upper right hand corner of the website.
