June Highlights


NC Cooperative Extension in Currituck started the summer with a flurry of activity in June. Here is your (slightly longer than) 60 second run down for the month. Included are overall numbers as well as highlights and images from 4-H, Agriculture, and Family and Consumer Sciences programs.

SHIIP Program Impact

Many retirees and Medicare beneficiaries on a fixed income want to save money wherever they can. Each year, thousands of people contact the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) throughout the state to help them identify savings in their Medicare coverages.

In Currituck County, the Senior Health Insurance Information Program is housed at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Center. This year volunteers and paid staff counselors met with 233 medicare beneficiaries saving these beneficiaries a total of $72,460.00 in insurance premiums and drug costs.

2022 Master Gardener Class

Do you enjoy gardening and talking with others about it? Do you have a passion for making a difference in your community? If so, consider becoming a part of the Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers!

The Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Currituck County is currently accepting applications for interested individuals. Course classes begin on Thursday, September 1, 2022, and will meet at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center, 120 Community Way, Barco, NC. 27917 every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. ending on December 13, 2022.

4-H Photography Contest

Formally known as the NC 4-H Photo Contest, this statewide annual contest highlights NC 4-H’ers photographic achievements. The winning photos will be displayed on the NC 4-H Photo Contest website.

In addition to 4-H In Action and Nature’s Beauty, the new category for 2022 is SPECIAL EFFECTS.

Electronic entries are due August 17 and must be uploaded by the County 4-H Agent.
