Yancey County 4-H Newsletter

July, 2022
Congratulations to our District Activity Day Winners!

Three Yancey County 4-H members presented at the 2022 West District 4-H Activity Day on Saturday, June 25th at AB Tech in Asheville. District Activity Day (DAD) is a 4-H Presentation public speaking competition for youth to present information on the topic of their choice. 4-H Presentations are a huge part of North Carolina 4-H. It is one of the most successful ways to help a young person learn essential public speaking skills. It focuses on members teaching others what they know about a particular project/subject matter.

Sam Gantt won Gold for his presentation on Rabbit Showmanship, Cooper Ledford won Silver for his presentation on Table Settings and Etiquette, and Jacob Ledford won Gold in the Beef Outdoor Cookery competition. Sam, Jacob and Cooper will advance to the State competition in July. We are so proud of each of these youth for their hard work and accomplishments!

July Volunteer Spotlight

For the month of July, Yancey County 4-H would like to spotlight two of our volunteers, Lynn Austin and April McCurry. Lynn and April are the club leaders for our Yancey County 4-H Beef Club. In Beef Club, youth can participate in the WNC Dairy Steer Project where youth participants get their own bottle calf, and attend monthly meetings where they learn how to care for, raise and show their animal. The program concludes by participants showing their animal in local Fairs. At the conclusion of the shows, the Dairy Steers are sold and youth receive the money from the sale. Lynn, April and their families work passionately to help make sure these youth are successful in their projects, providing them with guidance, resources and support all along the way!

Volunteers are the heart of the Yancey County 4-H program, and our Beef Club would not be possible without the dedication of Lynn and April! So next time you see them, be sure to thank them for all they do for the youth of Yancey County!

Stay tuned next month for our August Volunteer Spotlight!
