76th Annual McDowell County Junior Livestock Show

It’s summer. It’s HOT. It’s time for the 76th Annual McDowell County Junior Livestock Show. It’s tradition. A tradition we hold dear to our hearts in the McDowell County agriculture community.

The 2022 Livestock Show will be held Friday, August 5 and Saturday, August 6 at the McDowell Agricultural Center, Inc., 188 Ag Services Drive, Marion, 28752. This show is a great show for both new and experienced exhibitors.

Spotted Lanternfly Confirmed in NC

On June 29, 2022, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service (NCDA&CS) announced an infested area in Kernersville, a suburb of Winston-Salem in Forsyth County. Initial surveys indicate the infestation covers a 5-mile-radius area.

Wildfire Mitigation Cost-Share Program

During a wildfire all kinds of plant material can act as fuel for the fire – grasses, shrubs, trees, dead leaves, and fallen pine needles. The extent and density of this plant material around a structure, like your home, can influence the ability of firefighters to stop the fire from igniting the structure.

Catawba River Clean Up at Greenlee Park

N.C. Cooperative Extension – McDowell County Center’s Keep McDowell Beautiful program will be hosting a clean up of the Catawba River on July 30, 2022 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. We will have volunteer check in and trash drop off at the Greenlee Park 1212 Old Greenlee Rd, Marion.

The Science of Food Preservation

Many people tell me that they hated science when in school but they are avid canners and food preservers who make delicious foods to eat all year round. You may ask how is food preservation an example of science? When we preserve foods either by canning, freezing, pickling, fermenting or drying we are changing the food to decrease the chances of spoilage, bacteria and mold grown and to reduce the risk of getting sick if we eat the food later.

4-H Life Skills Camp “Surviving in the Real World”

Join us July 18-21 for our first-ever Life Skills Camp. This is a free camp for youth 13-18. Participants will learn about financial preparedness, healthy eating on a budget, resume building, interview skills, basic car maintenance, first aid and insurance. Each day lasts from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Space is limited.

Summer Thrive With McDowell 4-H

Summer Thrive is a program that provides fun, outdoor activities for families at the Marion Community Park or other places in downtown Marion each Saturday from June 11 to August 20.

McDowell 4-H will be hosting Summer Thrive with McDowell 4-H on Saturday, July 16 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Marion Community Park.

McDowell 4-Her Wins Big at West District
4-H Activity Day


On Saturday July 25, 4-Hers from across western North Carolina came to A-B Tech Community College in Asheville for the annual West District Activity Day. There were outdoor cooking presentations, science presentations and many more.

Greylan Kellogg from McDowell presented on Tornados in the Environmental Science Category.
