Congratulations to our State Presentation Competition Winners!

We would like to give a big congratulations to Yancey County 4-H’ers Jacob Ledford and Sam Gantt for winning at the NC 4-H State Presentation Finals! The NC 4-H State Presentation Finals take place in Raleigh at NC State University with over 250 youth from across the State competing in 34 different presentation categories.

Jacob won Gold in the Beef Char Grill Category, where he demonstrated his knowledge of beef cuts and preparation of a grilled sirloin steak. Sam won Bronze in the Small & Companion Animals Category, where he shared his knowledge of rabbit showmanship. These two youth have worked so hard on their presentations, developing life and public speaking skills which they will use for the rest of their lives. Congratulations Jacob and Sam!

Congratulations to our 2022 Electric Congress Delegates!

Two Yancey County 4-H members attended the 2022 North Carolina 4-H Electric Congress in Charlotte, NC, July 12-14. Electric Congress is an educational event designed to recognize excellence in the 4-H Electric Program throughout the state. In this program, youth learn about a variety of topics, including: circuits, AC and DC power, electrical wiring, and more. Through participation in this program, youth learn more about electricity and its safe, efficient use, learn about energy production and conservation, and generate enthusiasm for science and technology. Electric Congress travels from region to region of the state, thus allowing for a variety of programming opportunities for everyone. 4-H members participate in educational workshops, meet Power Company Representatives, learn about careers in the energy industry, and interact with other electric program participants. Special outings are planned to help youth learn more about their state; this year youth enjoyed a fun evening at Carowinds! Electric Congress is held for county winning 4-H’ers who participate in the electric program. To attend, youth must be 11 years of age (by Jan.1st).

This year, both Yancey County 4-H Electric Congress delegates, won awards for their project work in the electric program. Benjamin Varney won third place for the Duke Energy Progress Territorial Achievement Award. Derek Heidenfelder won second place for the Duke Energy Progress Territorial Achievement Award. We are so proud of these youth for their hard work and accomplishments. We would like to thank Duke Energy and Dominion Energy for sponsoring this event and providing youth with such a fun and impactful learning experience!
August Volunteer Spotlight

For the month of August, Yancey County 4-H would like to spotlight two of our volunteers, Connie McMahan and Reba Mathis. Connie and Reba are the volunteer leaders for our 4-H Sewing Club! Sewing Club is open to youth ages 5-18, of all skill levels! Previous sewing experience is not required. Connie and Reba have over 30 years of sewing experience which they graciously share with youth in Yancey County. This past year, club members created their own quilts! Many of these youth began in the club with no previous experience. Without the knowledge, skills, and compassion of Connie and Reba, Sewing Club would not be possible! So next time you see them, be sure to thank them for all they do for the youth of Yancey County!

If your child is interested in the Sewing Club, they will be having an interest meeting for the upcoming school year on Tuesday, August 2nd at 5:30pm at the Yancey Cooperative Extension.
