Canning Season is Here! Has Your Gauge Been Tested?
Did you know that your dial gauge pressure canner should be tested each year for accuracy?

Gauges that read high cause under-processing and may result in unsafe food. Gauges that read low cause over-processing. Pressure adjustments can be made if the gauge reads up to 2 pounds high or low, however gauges that differ by more than 2 pounds will need to be replaced.

Call the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Cherokee County Center at 828-837-2210 x5 or email Marlana Baker, Extension Agent Family & Consumer Sciences, at marlana_baker@ncsu.edu to request information or arrange a time for canner testing.

FREE Soil Samples
Our staff has training in Raleigh beginning October 3, 2022. Soil samples can be dropped off at our office through noon September 30 and we will deliver the samples to the lab in Raleigh the first week of October. Soil sampling is easy by following the directions from this instructional video. Soil sampling will continue to be free through November but it will cost a postage fee to send to the lab in Raleigh. There is a $4.00 fee for each sample from December thru March so now is a great time to take those samples to prepare for Spring 2023.

Could You Be the First NC Ag Star?

Paige King Johnson is a singer-songwriter originally from Angier, NC now traveling back and forth from Nashville, TN. She was recently named the first musical ambassador for the NC Department of Agriculture’s Got to Be NC program. There are a lot of different projects in the works with this partnership, but the main one is the upcoming NC Ag Star Homegrown Voice Talent Search in September & November of this year. As a Harnett County 4-H alum, Paige was involved in both the livestock programs and the arts programs, she is now reaching out to hopefully connect with some of our 4-H kids that may potentially be interested in this opportunity.
