As the opening of the great Led Zeppelin song Ramble On states,
"
The leaves are falling all around, time I was on my way".

You may be wondering what in the world this means in the FCS realm of things, but it fits quite nicely. October is a month encouraging change - and lots of it. As we start this fall season, I hope you'll think about how you can be "on your way" to create healthy changes as the "leaves are falling all around".

Changing Your Community
21% of Yancey residents ran out of food at least once in the past year and said they were worried about running out of food. Although our county does a fabulous job of providing food to insecure families during the summer, this is a much harder task outside of our regular growing season.

This month, we will be hosting a food drive to help make the holiday season a bit less stressful on our local families.

Changing Perceptions
October brings awareness of the risks involved with substance misuse to everyone across the nation.

Prevention works to delay the onset of use in our youth and is the most successful way to ensure a healthier community. Substance Use Prevention Month provides opportunities to get involved and make a difference in the future of the county.

Changing Your Finances
With the overwhelming amount of holidays coming up, October has been designated as Financial Planning Month.

Financial planning goes beyond budgeting and household expenses. A financial plan should be updated annually because of job changes, life changes, and economic fluctuations. Planning forms and checklists can be easily be found online or you can create your own.

This Month's Canning FAQ's

Although the home gardening season is winding down, canning questions are still pouring in. Things have been busy with teaching introductory canning classes for those new to the process, as well as those who haven't pulled out their canner in several years. Click the button to see some of the most common questions asked.

Say Cheese! Cheese Making Class
Are you tired of bringing the same old side dish or hors d'oeuvre to your holiday events? Do you want to create something completely customizable for your family to enjoy? Join us at the end of the month to learn more about the science behind cheese and how to make your very own Farmer Cheese. This is a simple recipe and the end result is similar to ricotta or mascarpone and is a great addition to any cheese or charcuterie board.

Date: Thursday, October 27th
Time: 1pm-3pm
Location: Reconciliation House
Fee: $10 per participant
