Sourwood Honey Tasting Contest

Who loves sourwood honey? On September 8, 7 p.m., at Keeper’s Cut Meadery, 175 West Henderson Street, the public is invited to attend and sample sourwood honey from across the county. You will then judge and vote for the best tasting Sourwood honey.

Introducing Our New Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent

Skyler Murray is the Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent for NCCE-McDowell County. Skyler grew up on her family’s fifth-generation farm in Rutherford County, where they grew row crops and raised livestock. Skyler developed a strong passion for agriculture at a very young age.

21st Annual Nursery Field Day

The WNC Nursery Field Day features the latest ornamental plant production research from around the region.  The Nursery Field Day will be held on Friday, September 16, 2022 at Hard and Flossie Clark Park in Collettsville, NC.

Saving Seeds in McDowell

The McDowell County Master Gardener Volunteers and the McDowell County Public Library will host a meeting on Starting a Seed Library on Tuesday, September 20, 5:30 p.m., in the lower level Conference Room. If you save seeds, like to share seeds, want to learn about saving seeds, or want to be part of the Seed Library project, please attend.

Lake James Clean Up Fall 2022

The N.C. Cooperative Extension-McDowell County Center “Keep McDowell Beautiful” program will be coordinating the biannual Lake James clean-up on Saturday, October 1, 2022, from 8 a.m. to noon. We invite everyone to remove litter from Lake James and its shoreline.

 
Pesticide Recertification Classes in Burke

These classes are open to any licensed pesticide applicator that needs renewal credits. Classes will be held at the Burke County Agricultural Bldg, 130 Ammons Dr, Morganton. Bring your license to receive your credits. Call 828-764-9480 to register.

Livestock Judging Clinic

NC State Livestock Evaluation Course will be hosting a livestock judging clinic to be held Thursday, November 3, 2022.  It will be a rotating event that will take place from 1-5.

McDowell 4-H Young Guns Excel at Regional Tournament

On Saturday, August 13, over 250 youth from WNC came together at Polk County Gun Club for our yearly 4-H regional tournament. McDowell was represented by Parker Griffin, Jocelyn Childres, Luke Lawing, Gunner Dietrich, Kaylen Best, Ben Mast, Daniel McManus, Garrison Dietrich, Hayden Edwards, Greylan Kellogg, Gracie Davis, and Bryson McDaniel.
