Grocery Gap Analysis Project Update |
|
|
|
|
 |
|
The Food Security Team has launched the Grocery Gap Analysis Project in June 2025, and we will be wrapping up the data collection at the end of this month!
The overarching goal of this project is to identify the gaps found within identified zip codes to determine the kinds of stores that are available in these areas, whether SNAP is accepted, and how affordable the food is. The findings will address those gaps by providing solutions that are specifically tailored to each of the local communities.
This project is led by Melodie, the Food Security Program Assistant, and conducted in partnership with Community Liaisons – trusted community members recommended by our established community partners that live within these areas being surveyed.
Our Community Liaisons did an incredible job completing the surveys for us in their respective zip codes, and we genuinely appreciate the time and effort the Community Liaisons put into the surveys. The Community Liaisons were an integral and invaluable part of this project, and we're thankful that we had the opportunity to share this journey with them.
Be on the lookout for further updates regarding the collected data from this project! |

The Greater High Point Food Alliance is looking forward to seeing you at this year’s Food Summit, Beyond the Plate: Food Security and Economic Stability through Strategic Partnerships. This year’s theme reflects a powerful message — that addressing food insecurity requires more than just providing meals — it requires collaboration across sectors to create lasting, systemic change. By fostering strong partnerships between nonprofits and the for-profit sector, we have the opportunity to not only meet immediate needs but also build a stronger, more resilient community. Let’s work together to bridge gaps, share resources, and develop innovative solutions that go beyond the plate.
The 2025 Food Summit will take place on September 19th from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM at The Loft at Congdon Yards (400 W. English St., High Point, NC 27262).

Community Partner Spotlight |

This month's spotlight goes to A Simple Gesture (ASG)!
A Simple Gesture (ASG) is a nonprofit hunger relief organization that collects food from generous donors. ASG's main goals are to provide a regular supply of food to our hungry neighbors, to create new neighborhood connections and strengthen our community, and to serve as a model for other communities. ASG is most known for their three main programs, the Green Bag Program, the Food Recovery Program, and the school-based SHARE Program.
Below is an overview of ASG's three main programs:
1. The Green Bag Program — Guilford County residents commit to filling one of ASG's green reusable grocery bags with nonperishable food every month or every other month (their choice). On the designated pickup day, they place their full bags of food on their porches. ASG's volunteers pick up those bags of food, take them directly to a partner food pantry, and leave an empty bag for the food donor's next pickup. In 2024, ASG collected 386,797 lbs of food for local food pantries. That food is valued at $746,518.
2. Food Recovery Program — ASG works with restaurants, caterers, grocery stores (through Second Harvest Food Bank/Feeding America), and other businesses to recover short-dated or excess food and get that food to nonprofits serving meals to the community or to clients. In 2024, ASG's food recovery program collected 1,543,945 lbs of food that otherwise might have ended up in the trash. That food is valued at $2,979,813.
3. School-based SHARE Program — ASG purchased a refrigerator for every public school in Guilford County. Students who have excess unopened food from their cafeteria lunch (carton of milk, pack of carrots, etc.) place these items in the SHARE refrigerator. Any child who is hungry for any reason can take food from the SHARE refrigerator, no questions asked.
This year is also ASG's 10th birthday! ASG was founded in 2015 when the Greensboro/High Point metro area was named the hungriest in the country. ASG will be having a birthday party on August 21st, 2025 at 6:00 PM in partnership with Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 3906 W Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410. The community is invited, so please attend if you're able to!
Leslie Loyd, President and COO of A Simple Gesture, says, "Food pantries and our nonprofit partners have been struggling to keep up with demand for the last several years. As prices keep going up, working families are finding that their paychecks don't stretch far enough to cover rent, transportation, childcare, and medical care. Having well-stocked food pantries and providing recovered food for community meals is vitally important for these families." Thank you, Leslie!
There are a few ways to get involved with A Simple Gesture!
1.) Volunteer with ASG! ASG's volunteers are the essential driving force behind their mission to end hunger in Guilford County.
2.) Be a food donor! Check out ASG's three food collection programs to see which one is best for you.
3.) Host a food drive! ASG has all the tools you need for your group to have a successful food drive.
4.) Join ASG at community events! ASG loves being in the community and spreading the word about their mission.
5.) Donate money to ASG! With each donation, you are helping ASG end hunger in Guilford County.
Thank you A Simple Gesture for your community efforts in helping individuals, children, and their families combat food insecurity! For more information about A Simple Gesture and the wonderful work they're doing, please click the button below! |
