January 2025 - Happy New Year!

Program Highlights

NC Cooperative Extension Blessing Box

The Food Security Team is supporting the Food & Consumer Sciences (FCS) team in establishing a Blessing Box within the local community! Did you know that the zip code of 27405, where the Guilford County Center is located, is classified as a food desert? The blessing box is here to serve whoever may need or whoever wants to give out of the goodness of their heart. Since its inception over Summer 2024, over 100 lbs of food have been donated! (That weight does not include the personal hygiene items that have been donated as well.)

We need your help keeping the Blessing Box stocked! If you are able to, please donate to the Blessing Box and help out your fellow neighbors! The Blessing Box is located right here at the Guilford County Center: 3309 Burlington Rd., Greensboro, NC 27405.

If you have any questions or want to donate, please contact Vincent Webb (vince_webb@ncsu.edu; (336) 641-2412). Thank you for your interest in supporting our community!

Growing Together: A Buyer-Farmer Meet Up

The first ever "speed-dating" event between Buyers and Farmers that occurred on January 22nd, 2025 from 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM was a success! Thank you Buyers and Farmers alike that attended and helped make this such a fun and memorable inaugural event. We hope to see something beautiful bloom from the seeds of connections that were planted.

Thank you again for the excitement surrounding this event, and be on the lookout for more Buyer-Farmer "speed-dating" events in the future!

Community Partner Spotlight

This month's spotlight goes to BackPack Beginnings!

BackPack Beginnings (BPB) is a nonprofit organization based in Guilford County, NC. It was started in 2010 and is run mostly by volunteers—95% of the team are volunteers! BPB helps over 25,000 kids in the community who are dealing with hunger and trauma. The organization works with almost 200 partners in Guilford, Forsyth, and Alamance Counties, as well as through their Family Market. BPB focuses on helping kids because hunger and trauma can cause serious problems, such as delays in learning, emotions, and growth, which can affect kids for life. BPB’s programs aim to improve the health and well-being of children in the community.

Parker, the Founder/Executive Director of BackPack Beginnings, says, "at BackPack Beginnings, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive and every family deserves support during challenging times. By providing essential resources like food, clothing, diapers, school supplies, and more, we aim to meet immediate needs. Our newest initiatives include the Family Market and Beyond the Basics programs. The Family Market is a welcoming, retail-style space where families can select essential items at no cost, fostering a sense of dignity and choice. Beyond the Basics builds on the foundation of the Family Market by providing personalized, in-depth coaching to help families address long-term needs and achieve self-sufficiency." Thank you, Parker!

There are a few ways to get involved with BackPack Beginnings!

1.) Volunteer your time! The work of BackPack Beginnings would not be possible without the support of all their volunteers.

2.) Donate money to BackPack Beginnings! Your donation can make all the difference for a child facing a long weekend filled with hunger or a day shattered by a traumatic experience.

3.) Donate items to BackPack Beginnings! Please click the link if you or your group are interested in collecting in-kind donations for BPB.

4.) Host a food drive! BPB needs your help conducting food drives!

5.) Purchase honor cards! Honor cards are a great gift to give while helping children in need.

Thank you BackPack Beginnings for your community efforts in helping children and their families to overcome food insecurity and other issues! For more information about BackPack Beginnings and the wonderful work they're doing, please click the button below!
