This month's spotlight goes to the Greater High Point Food Alliance (GHPFA)!
The Greater High Point Food Alliance (GHPFA) is a nonprofit grassroots organization that was founded by former Executive Director Carl Vierling in 2014 to address food insecurity. 2014 was also the year the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) was number two in the nation regarding food hardship. Since its creation, GHPFA strives to coordinate and improve the effectiveness of entities in the Greater High Point area focused on alleviating hunger by creating and executing city-wide and neighborhood-focused initiatives to develop more just and sustainable food systems.
GHPFA puts together and updates the Greater Guilford Community Resource Guide every 6 months, and also maintains the Greater Guilford Food Finder App. GHPFA also hosts the annual Food Summit, offers the Growing Towards Leadership program, and drives sustainable solutions to food insecurity in their community through the Food Security Fund. To date, the Food Security Fund has invested nearly $350,000 into transformative efforts across the Greater High Point area.
Since GHPFA's inception, they have worked within three pillars of growth: Empower. Unify. Sustain.
1.) Empower — the community to seek solutions. GHPFA provides community members with the tools to become advocates for themselves and develop solutions for their neighborhood.
2.) Unify — neighbors and partners to align community efforts. GHPFA works collaboratively to create positive solutions, encourage opportunities for open dialogue and collective planning, and increase access to vital resources.
3.) Sustain — community-driven frameworks to shift from short-term relief to long-term development. Through community engagement and buy-in, GHPFA helps meet today's needs without compromising future growth, resilience, and long-lasting success.
Rebekah Dobbins, Executive Director of GHPFA, says, "We are grateful to be featured in this month’s Community Partner Spotlight. The Greater High Point Food Alliance is strengthened by the dedication of our community partners who work alongside us to build a more just and sustainable food system for all. As we prepare for our annual Food Summit, expand our advocacy efforts, deepen collaboration through our Pantry Connect initiative, work to reduce barriers to food access through our Guilford County Food Finder app/Resource Guides, and invest in food pantry staff and volunteers through programs like Growing Towards Leadership, we invite everyone to connect with us through our new website and social media to stay engaged in this important work." Thank you, Rebekah!
