Program Highlights

National Urban Extension Leaders Southern & 1980's Regional Conference

The Food Security Team attended the National Urban Extension Leaders (NUEL) Southern & 1890's Regional Conference from May 6-8, 2025! We created a research poster about our Photovoice project and presented to our Extension colleagues who traveled from various Southern states. The theme of the conference was "The Power of WE: Partnering for Impact", and we most definitely felt this theme being exemplified throughout the conference! By connecting with Extension Agents from other states, we were able to bring back fresh ideas that we can adapt to our community.

The Food Security Team is also in talks with some of our colleagues from NC State University about possibly creating a Photovoice Extension Agent guide so that we can bring this project to the state-level. We hope that by writing the blueprint for other counties to follow and adapt to their communities, we can continue uplifting the important yet often unseen and unheard voices of hunger present in our neighborhoods.

In other news, the Food Security Team was featured in an article highlighting local food! The article is titled, "Rooted in Community: Guilford County’s Approach to Food Security". Morgan Marshall, the Extension Master Food Volunteer Program Manager & Local Food Communications Assistant at NC State University, did a wonderful job writing and putting the article together, so please click the link below to learn more about us and what we do!

Community Partner Spotlight

This month's spotlight goes to the United Way of Greater High Point (UWGHP)!

The United Way of Greater High Point (UWGHP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families in High Point, Archdale, Trinity, and Jamestown. UWGHP's mission is to develop resources and partnerships that make a measurable difference in people’s lives. Through a focus on education, financial stability, and health, UWGHP partners with 25 agencies to fund programs that make a measurable difference in the community. By uniting individuals and organizations, UWGHP strives to build a stronger and more resilient community for all.

UWGHP is also celebrating 90 years of service and impact in the Greater High Point community this year! Since 1935, United Way of Greater High Point has been a cornerstone of support, fostering meaningful change through collaboration and compassion.

Latoya Bullock, UWGHP's Vice President of Community Impact, says, "At United Way of Greater High Point, we’re deeply committed to building a stronger, healthier community—starting with making sure our neighbors don’t go hungry. This May, we partnered with local post offices and letter carriers for the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual food drive, collecting thousands of pounds of food to support more than 10 local pantries serving families in need. At the same time, we’re proud to be providing weekend meals to over 2,000 food-insecure students across the Greater High Point area through our United Way BackPack Program. These students rely on school meals during the week, and this initiative helps ensure they don’t go hungry over the weekend. We’re especially grateful to The Salvation Army of High Point for being our lead packing partner in this effort. These programs reflect our broader mission—to unite people and resources to improve lives in our community—and show what’s possible when we all come together with compassion and purpose." Thank you, Latoya!
