As the holiday season draws near, the Food Security Team is thrilled to announce our Farm Fresh Holiday Meal Distribution Program, a heartfelt initiative designed to bring the warmth and joy of the season to senior citizens and homebound individuals in our community.
Last year, in partnership with the Triad Black Faith Leader and Black Farmer Network (TBFL &BFN), Helping Hands, Chavis YMCA, Growing High Point, Savor the Moment Bakery, local farmers, and volunteers, we were able to distribute over 2,000 food boxes! This year, our goal is to deliver 5,000 food boxes throughout the county as we continue the tradition of working together to source fresh food from local farmers and add thoughtful touches to our holiday packages to spread extra cheer.
Our program aims to provide nutritious, farm-fresh food packages that include a selection of locally grown produce, a meat protein, and special baked good. To further enhance the holiday spirit, each package will also feature handmade holiday cards created by children at the YMCA. These cards are crafted with love and creativity, ensuring that every recipient receives not only a meal but also a personal message of holiday joy.
This year our goal is to distribute 3,000 boxes, so be on the lookout for ways to donate and/or contribute in the coming weeks!

This month's spotlight goes to Growing High Point!
Growing High Point is a non-profit initiative that works works to transform disadvantaged neighborhoods by converting vacant lots to urban agriculture, increasing economic mobility by fostering small business development, increasing fresh food availability in neighborhoods, and engaging residents in building a shared sense of purpose and possibility in their neighborhoods.
Growing High Point works to expand and improve our local food system to increase access to, and availability of, locally-produced agricultural products, develop strategies for value-added agricultural production, and deepen collaboration throughout our local food system in an effort to improve resiliency and create community green spaces that improve overall mental and physical health.
There are a few ways to get involved with Growing High Point!
1.) Volunteer to pack and/or deliver Free Farm Shares, prep for the High Point Farmers Market, and harvest produce at their farms! Don't see a volunteer opportunity that works for you? Email Growing High Point to coordinate a volunteer work day!
2.) Participate in Free Farm Shares! Plant some extra produce just for the purpose of donating to Growing High Point, if the gardener has the space available. If you would like to donate produce from your garden to local families, please email Growing High Point.
3.) Become a Farmer-In-Training (F.I.T.) if you are interested in farming but need some basic training! Growing High Point’s F.I.T. program, sponsored by the City of High Point, provides the opportunity to gain skills in agriculture practices. The training lasts for one growing season learning the skills, strategies, and techniques that will help participants determine whether urban farming could be a path to entrepreneurship. Once training is complete, F.I.T. graduates have the option to adopt a plot of land and become part of
the network of urban farm leaders.
Thank you Growing High Point for your community efforts in helping families to overcome food insecurity! For more information about Growing High Point and the wonderful work they're doing, please click the button below!
