NC Arbor Day - March 17th

Nationally, Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday of April, however, most states observe Arbor Day on a date of their choosing in accordance with the best tree-planting times. In North Carolina, we celebrate Arbor Day on the first Friday following March 15. This year, NC Arbor Day falls on Friday, March 17. Arbor Day is all about celebrating trees.

Elm Zigzag Sawfly

The elm zigzag sawfly (Aproceros leucopoda Takeuchi ; Hymenoptera: Argidae) is an invasive insect from East Asia that feeds on and defoliates elm trees (Ulmus spp.). It was first detected in North America in Québec, Canada in 2020 and has since been found in Virginia in 2021 and North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York in 2022. Elm zigzag sawfly larvae feed exclusively on the leaves of elm trees (Ulmus spp.). In North Carolina, hosts in the area where the initial infestation occurred include American and winged elm. March 9th, 2023 (Th), 12 - 1 PM ET, NC Tree Farm Webinar: Restoring Upland Oak Forests.
Regenerating oak is more of a process than an event. The probability of replacing an existing oak forest with a new one by just cutting it down and letting it grow back is zero or unacceptably low. It takes proper planning and a series of sequenced silvicultural treatments, including prescribed fire, to have any chance of restoring an existing oak forest. This webinar, offered by the N.C. Tree Farm Program, will address how to use a modified oak shelterwood system to restore upland oak and describe the prerequisites and necessary steps for success. The webinar is an introduction to a more intense two-day Restoring Upland Oak Forests field training that the N.C. Tree Farm Program will offer in September.
