NC Bradford Pear Bounty

A bounty is out on the Bradford Pear Tree. The Bradford pear tree is an ornamental commonly planted tree in NC known for its characteristic white blossoms in early spring. These invasive trees are stinky, structurally weak, can breed with other varieties of pear trees to spread in natural forests, replacing native trees and creating “food deserts” for birds.
Through the Bradford Pear Bounty program, you could get new native trees in exchange for cutting down Bradford pears on your land. The effort will launch on April 23rd in Greensboro, NC and will expand to more locations in the fall.

Zoning and Land Use Regulation of Forestry

Forest landowners and others involved with forest management practices need to know about county and municipal jurisdictions and the land use laws and regulations that apply to their forestlands. Local land use regulations can impact forest harvesting, thinning, and replanting. Forest landowners may have to bear the burden of substantial fines, legal costs, restoration costs, and other expenses if zoning and other land use regulations are violated. To avoid fines and penalties, landowners must know which land use regulations apply to their property. In our new Woodland Owners Notes publication, we discuss how zoning and land use regulations impact the practice of forestry in North Carolina and explain planning jurisdictions, components of a zoning ordinance, and where to go for more information.

Joro Spider Not as Scary as It Looks

The Joro Spider is getting its time in the spotlight! Headlines across the region warn of this spider, but how worried should North Carolinians be? It's harmless to humans and seems to have little impact on ecosystems.
The only real threat they post is as a nuisance pest. Joro spiders are large and many people consider spiders unwanted or scary. On the flip side, Joro spiders are seen by many as pretty and beneficial. However you see them, the reality is they are on their way and will likely be something you’ll have to learn to live with.

USFS: The DREAM Project

Researchers asked the question, how can land managers be sure that trees planted today will meet the climatic challenges of tomorrow? They found that one strategy that holds promise is assisted migration. Assisted migration is defined as the human-assisted relocation of species in response to climate change. The USFS North Research Station has recently launched the DREAM Project - Desired Regeneration through Assisted Migration Project. This research will build a foundation of identifying tree species and genetic stock that could perform well as the climate continues to change as well as develop the silvicultural tools that will help managers plant the forests of tomorrow, today.
