4-H Livestock Judging

The Orange County 4-H Livestock Judging Team will begin meeting on October 17th at 6:00 PM at the Bonnie B. Davis Environment and Agricultural Center.  We are excited to get the ball rolling for next year’s competitions and hope to field a full team in July.  If your child is 8 to 18 years old and has an interest in livestock, then we would be happy to have them!  4-H Livestock Judging is designed to increase youths’ knowledge of evaluating different species of livestock.  Team members also learn how to effectively share their thought processes through oral reasons.

This opportunity is open to both Orange and Durham County 4-H members.  Initially, practices will consist of introductions of the different components of the contest (swine, cattle, small ruminants, questions, and reasons), and virtual practice classes of the different species.  Eventually, practices will transition to judging live animals to better prepare for the competition.

We will also enter other judging competitions throughout the year to prepare for the state contest if the group decides to.  Dates for those will be shared at a later date.

There are other 4-H Livestock opportunities for youth that can’t get enough of livestock:

  • Skillathon
  • Youth learn how to identify tools, breeds of livestock, and cuts of meat.
  • Quiz Bowl
  • If you are a fan of Jeopardy!, then you are going to love 4-H Quiz Bowl!  Teams of four take turns going head-to-head with an opposing team member to see who can answer a livestock-related question.  There are also Quiz Bowl opportunities
  • Livestock Shows
  • 4-H offers circuits throughout the state and Orange County hosts the Central Piedmont Junior Livestock Show in April.  The N.C. State Fair also holds numerous livestock shows in October.

October Cattleman's Meeting
The Orange & Durham Cattlemen’s Association will have their first fall meeting of the fall on October 7th at 6:00 PM at the Orange County Cooperative Extension Office.  If you own cattle in Orange or Durham County, you are invited and we encourage you to attend!  Following the meal ($10 per plate) we will hear from Dr. Silva from North Carolina State University about the importance of breeding season management.

RSVP by Saturday October 6th to Neil Frank, 919-491-9742 or neiltfrank@gmail.com

Useful Resources

Health and Safety for Specialty Crops Mini-Grant Program
The NC Agromedicine Institute continues to have funds to reimburse specialty crop producers for health and safety improvements on their farms (please see attached). Currently maximum out of pocket expenditure for producers is $3500 with maximum reimbursement of 70% or $2450. Participants are  eligible to receive free health and safety training of their choice.

Interested in Transitioning to Organic?
Before crops can be certified organic, farmers must carefully manage their land without using prohibited inputs like synthetic pesticides for 36 months. During this transition period and during the first years after certification, farmers often face many technical and market challenges. The Organic Transition Initiative (OTI) is a $300 million multi-agency USDA effort to support this transition and build and strengthen organic markets.

Visit NC Farms
The Visit NC Farms App is a statewide mobile marketing tool that connects consumers to local foods and farmers in
their community. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services designed the app to drive
traffic to local farms and local-food providers. The app promotes local agritourism, farmers’ markets, and other agriculture-related businesses.
