Climate Change May Cut America’s Forest Inventory by a Fifth This Century

"A study led by a North Carolina State University researcher found that under more severe climate warming scenarios, the inventory of trees used for timber in the continental United States could decline by as much as 23% by 2100. The largest inventory losses would occur in two of the leading timber regions in the U.S., which are both in the South."

Coming Events of Interest to Woodland Owners

June 17th, 2023 (Sat), 9 AM - 4 PM ET, Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Workshop @ Fort Fisher. Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators as we explore activities in the newly released Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide at the Fort Fisher Aquarium at Kure Beach, NC. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide that includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. June 21st, 2023 (W), 8:30 AM - 12 PM ET, Timber Income and Expenses: Business or Investor Income Tax Reporting? What a Tax Professional Needs to Know. Combining lecture, example problems, discussion and questions, this half-day workshop is appropriate for all levels of experience. Discussion will address timber tax issues, including: What is timber for income tax purposes?, Basis, Reporting of income: business versus investor, Expense deduction: business versus investor, Form T, Like-kind exchange, Conservation easements, Carbon credits, and Property tax considerations. You will take home a valuable workbook with detailed examples and problems. No advanced preparation is required and there are no prerequisites for this course. Cost: $150. July 18th, 2023 (Tu), 1 - 2 PM ET, Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Forestry in the U.S. South Webinar. How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect the timber industry, forest-based employment, and overall forest management in the U.S. South? Results suggest that mandatory lockdown orders for all individuals led to a decrease in round wood prices and employment in the aggregate forest sector. In this webinar, researchers will also briefly discuss their ongoing regional forest landowner survey about the forest management in the post-pandemic period.
