Whether you are in the Mountains, Piedmont, or Coastal Plain, tree species have certain sites that they are most competitive in. This is influenced by the terrain, soils, and existing species. This publication can help landowners determine what tree species they can expect to grow in different parts of their property.

1st Quarter 2024 Timber Price Report

The 1st quarter timber price report for 2024 is available now! Prices were down in five out of six timber product categories. The price report provides state-wide, average standing timber prices for pine, oak, and mixed hardwood sawtimber, pine chip-n-saw, and pine and hardwood pulpwood. Timber prices may vary greatly depending on many factors including location, species, products, access, and distance to mill.

Growing a More Climate-Resilient Christmas Tree

NC State University assistant professor, Dr. Justin Whitehill, was recently featured on WUNC NC Public Radio about the NC State Christmas Tree Genetics Program and his efforts to grow trees that can be harvested sooner, hold onto carbon more efficiently, and look more like the “perfect Christmas tree”– with a goal to benefit growers, consumers and the environment!

New Bertie County Forestry Association

After several years gathering interest from local woodland owners, the Bertie County Forestry Association was officially formed on March 27! With approximately 315,000 acres of privately owned timberland, Bertie County ranks among the top 5 counties in timber sales in North Carolina annually. With this type of resource, it is only natural for interested parties to gather together with the common goal of promotion and education. The goals of the Assn. are to promote best management practices of forest and timber management among woodland owners of all size and to promote the forest industry in Bertie and surrounding Counties.

Coming Events of Interest to Woodland Owners

May 4th, 2024 (Sat), 9 AM - 4 PM ET, Project Learning Tree K-12 Workshop: Climate Change Focus at the North Carolina Arboretum. Join classroom and nonformal educators in Asheville, NC as we explore climate-related activities in Project Learning Tree's Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide and the secondary module Southeastern Forests and Climate Change. Participants will also receive access to PLT's Carbon & Climate E-Unit. This workshop is geared towards educators working with middle and high school students, but is open to anyone that is interested in the subject and materials. Register for $20 by April 26th at 5 PM. May 8th, 2024 (W), 9 AM - 3 PM ET, Heirs Property Summit (Robeson County). Attend our hands-on, practical workshop about heirs property in Lumberton, NC! Learn about the origin and history of heirs property and estate planning and legal strategies to secure their land. Join ForestHer NC in Currie, NC for a fun and educational workshop on identifying different types of songbirds and managing your land to provide invaluable habitats for them. In this workshop, walk through several different forest types, including wet pine (longleaf) savannas that have been managed by the National Park Service for nearly 30 years. May 23rd, 2024 (Th), 9:30 - 3:30 PM ET, Avery & Mitchell Counties Forestry Field Tour. Join us as we examine forest management conducted in Avery and Mitchell Counties and see what practices can be employed on your property to generate a beautiful and profitable stand. A myriad of natural resource professionals from the Natural Resource Conservation Service, The Nature Conservancy, Roughed Grouse Society, and the landowner, Jim Phillips, will provide a walking panel discussion on managing quality hardwood sawtimber in the Appalachian Mountains. The cost for this event is $20. Costs cover a provided lunch and transportation during the event. Please pay via check by mailing it to the Mitchell County Extension office at 10 S Mitchell Ave, Bakersville, NC 28705. Or you can drop it off at the Mitchell County office in person.
