North Carolina’s Fall Foliage: Will It Be A Disappointing Year?

This year’s fall foliage might not live up to expectation as warm, dry conditions persist across the state, according to an NCSU Forestry Extension expert, Dr. Robert Bardon. North Carolina has experienced above-average temperatures throughout the summer, and if the heat persists in the weeks leading up to autumn, it could delay the onset of color production.

National Forest Products Week (10/17-10/23)

In 1960, Congress passed a resolution during the third week of October to “focus attention on the importance of our forests and forest products to the nation’s economy and welfare.” Our forests give us numerous products. Beyond wood and paper products, our forests provide fuel, medicines, food, cosmetics, cleaners, and much more! October 14, 2021 (Th), 1 PM - 2:30 PM ET, ForestHER NC Webinar: The History and Role of Prescribed Fire in North Carolina. Join ForestHER NC landowners, natural resource professionals, and others about the history and role of prescribed fire in North Carolina! This webinar will focus on the important role fire plays in forest ecosystems. Participants will learn about the history of fire in North Carolina and how prescribed fire is used to reduce the risk of wildfires, to benefit fire-dependent ecosystems, and as a tool for forest and wildlife management. October 21, 2021 (Th), 4 - 6 PM ET, Watauga County Cooperative Extension Ginseng Workshop.
Watauga County Cooperative Extension will be hosting a field demonstration workshop on wild-simulated ginseng production at the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center.  Dr. Jim Hamilton will provide an overview of ginseng production and a field demonstration on how to successfully plant and cultivate wild-simulated ginseng. The cost to attend the workshop is $75. Participants will receive ¼ pound of stratified ginseng seed and a copy of “Growing & Marketing Ginseng and other woodland medicinals. Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators at the Union County Agricultural Center in Monroe, NC as we explore activities in the newly released Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. The PLT activity guides are provided free of charge to participants through support from the NC Forestry Association. CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program (K-8). Register by October 15th. The registration fee is $20. October 26, 2021 (Tu) - October 27, 2021 (W), Virtual Forest Landowner Conference. The Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project helps families in Roanoke Electric Cooperative’s service territory increase the income and asset value of family-owned forestland and encourages forest health, land retention, and the opportunity to create intergenerational wealth. This conference will inform and educate landowners on strategies for estate planning; on programs and technical assistance available through state forestry agencies and U.S. Department of Agriculture agencies; and on forestry and agricultural taxation. More information to come.

November 3, 2021 (W), 1 - 5 PM ET, Project Learning Tree: Explore Your Environment K-8 Workshop (Hybrid). Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators in this hybrid event as we explore activities in the newly released Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. The PLT activity guides are provided free of charge to participants through support from the NC Forestry Association. This workshop will take place at the Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch Library in Greensboro, NC. 2 hours of required work must be completed before the workshop begins at 1 PM. CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I or II in the EE Certification Program (K-8). Register by October 15th. The registration fee is $20.
