2024 3rd Quarter Price Report
The 3rd quarter price report for NC timber markets is now available! Average state-wide trends saw an increase in prices for pine pulpwood, mixed hardwood sawtimber, and oak sawtimber while pine chip-n-saw, pine sawtimber, and hardwood pulpwood saw declines.
Price trends were similar for Eastern and Western NC, with the exception of hardwood pulpwood prices which dropped in Western NC and rose slightly in Eastern NC.

NC Forest Damage Appraisal Hurricane Helene
The NC Forest Service's Hurricane Helene forestland damage assessment is now available.
"An estimated 822,000 acres of timberland received some level of damage during the storm resulting in an estimated $214,000,000 of timber damage on all North Carolina forest lands."

Downlisting of Red-cockaded Woodpecker from Endangered to Threatened
Good news! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced the downlisting of the red-cockaded woodpecker from endangered to threatened status under the Endangered Species Act! They cite that, "This milestone is the result of five decades of collaborative conservation efforts between the Interior Department, federal and state partners, Tribes, the private sector and private landowners that have resulted in increasing populations of these remarkable birds throughout their range."

December 13th, 2024 (F), 1 - 2 PM ET, Site Considerations Before Establishing a New Seed Orchard. In this webinar, participants will learn about key site characteristics to consider before establishing a seed orchard. Topics will include factors such as soil type, previous land use and compaction, aspect, elevation, and proximity to water sources, all of which can impact the success of a future seed orchard. January 14th, 2025 (Tu), 9 AM - 3:30 PM ET, Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Workshop. Join preservice teachers, K-8 classroom and nonformal educators at Belmont Abbey College as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. This all-day event is designed for woodland and forest landowners who desire a deeper understanding of forestry and wildlife management. The event is meant to enable participants to make informed decisions concerning the management, enhancement, and enjoyment of their forest. Presentation topics will cover a variety of forestry and wildlife issues, as well as specific management practices that can be implemented to improve or enhance the forest. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from foresters, wildlife biologists, university professors, and Extension specialists, as well as visit with non-profit and for-profit organizations exhibiting their products and services.
