Recovering From a Disaster: Things Forest Landowners Should Consider
Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to forest and timberland through high winds and especially flooding in many areas of Western North Carolina. Recovering from a storm of this magnitude can be a long, difficult, and stressful process. Knowing what to consider, how to prioritize, and where to go for guidance can help reduce stress and make it more manageable to respond to damaged timber on your property. Updated Range Map of the Elm Zigzag Sawfly
The Elm Zigzag Sawfly had an active year in 2024. While North Carolina has not seen a new infestation since 2022, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Massachusets, and Virginia had new detections of this defoliator this year. Minnesota and Wisconsin are new to the list, with first-time reports in multiple counties. See our newly updated range map for more information.

Good news: "The North Carolina Christmas Tree Association doesn’t expect Hurricane Helene’s aftermath to significantly affect the supply of North Carolina Fraser Fir Christmas trees this holiday season." Jennifer Greene, executive director for the Association, says, "People can support Christmas tree farmers in western North Carolina by buying a real Christmas tree, preferably a North Carolina Fraser fir." Coming Events of Interest to Woodland Owners
October 30th, 2024 (W), 1 - 2 PM ET, Webinar: Timber Tax: Capturing Loss from Hurricane Helene and other Landowner Issues and Considerations. This one-hour webinar will provide an update on Hurricane Helene timber damage, and strategies for capturing losses for tax purposes, as well as an overview of various timber tax topics. Topics include timber basis, IRS distinctions between a business, investment or a hobby, what is a back cruise and when is it helpful in determining taxes, when to use form T, and a host of other helpful topics for a landowner considering tax implications and best strategies relating to timber. Join classroom and nonformal educators at the Union County Ag Building in Monroe, NC as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Trees and Me: Activities for Exploring Nature with Young Children activity guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide which includes revised favorites and new activities with a focus on learning for youth ages 1-6. November 12th, 2024 (Tu), 8:45 AM - 4 PM ET, Hofmann Forest Workshop. This workshop in Jacksonville, NC provides foresters with an update on the Hofmann Forest, and allows them to earn CFE credits. Morning presentations by representatives from NC State's College of Natural Resources, Resource Management Service (RMS), and the North Carolina Forestry Association (NCFA) will be followed by an afternoon field tour of Hofmann Forest. November 21st, 2024 (Th), 12 - 1 PM ET, NC Tree Farm Webinar: An Overview of Bottomland Hardwood Forests. This presentation will define bottomland forests, discuss their function and silvicultural challenges, address which species to favor and outline some forest management practices that landowners can implement.
