May 2025
Wildfire Awareness Month

May is Wildfire Awareness Month. It's a time to increase awareness about wildfire risks, how to prevent them, and how to protect yourself and your community.
In North Carolina, there are many wildfire-related resources available that can help you keep informed of current wildfire conditions, learn about wildfire, and take action to reduce your wildfire risk.

Heirs’ Property in North Carolina: What Is It and Why Should I Care?

Heirs’ property is a complicated, vulnerable form of property ownership in which wills are absent and land is passed down informally for generations. New heirs’ property continues to be created, with a concerning number of landowners having no succession plans and leaving property without a will for their heirs. Our hope is that this publication will begin to move the needle for landowners to engage families in meaningful succession and estate planning and to take the necessary legal steps to ensure the wise transfer of assets to succeeding generations.

Conservation Easements and Agreements: Obligations, Modification, and Termination

This Farm Law for Operators and Landowners narrative provides an overview of two types of land protection available to owners of working farm and forest land in North Carolina - the Agricultural Conservation Easement and the Voluntary Agricultural District - in terms of funding, term, and revocability. It is a valuable read for landowners interested in family land legacies involving conservation planning and enrollment in state and federal conservation and land protection programs.
Help Map Invasive Species Spread

Help researchers map the spread of two invasive species throughout the nation: (1) Callery pear trees and (2) elm zigzag sawflies.

1. Callery pear trees: See invasive Callery pear trees in your community? Help researchers map escaped Callery pear (the wild offspring of 'Bradford' and other ornamental varieties). If you see escaped Callery pears in forests or landscapes near you, take a picture and report it on https://invasivepearwatch.org

2. Elm zigzag sawfly: Help researchers find the elm zigzag sawfly! This new invasive pest, known for its distinctive zigzag feeding pattern on elm leaves, is expected to emerge soon. Keep an eye on your elm trees and help us track its spread! If you see zigzag damage, report your sightings on https://forms.gle/b8i7EhXQPazsvK3s7
