USDA to Invest $1 Billion in Climate Smart Commodities, Expanding Markets, Strengthening Rural America

"Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today at Lincoln University that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is delivering on its promise to expand markets by investing $1 billion in partnerships to support America’s climate-smart farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners. The new Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities opportunity will finance pilot projects that create market opportunities for U.S. agricultural and forestry products that use climate-smart practices and include innovative, cost-effective ways to measure and verify greenhouse gas benefits. USDA is now accepting project applications for fiscal year 2022." Funding will be provided in two funding pools, and applicants must submit their applications via Grants.gov by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on: April 8, 2022, for the first funding pool, and May 27, 2022, for the second funding pool.

What is Climate Smart Forestry? A Brief Overview

Climate smart forestry (CSF) is a recent ‘buzz word’ among forestry communities in the United States, specifically in the policy front. It is a targeted and long-term strategy to augment climate benefits from forests and the forest sector in a manner that complements other forest-based goods and services. Ultimately, CSF enables “forests and society to transform, adapt to, and mitigate climate-induced changes” (Bowditch et al., 2020). While the concept is relatively newer, landowners and managers have already been adopting and applying several CSF strategies to active forest resource management in the United States. Our recent overview further explains CSF and common CSF strategies.

Practicing Forestry Under Local Regulations

As North Carolina’s population expands, more and more forestland disappears, converted to residential, retail, industrial, and other nonforestry uses. As trees are removed, perceived and real environmental impacts may bring about restrictive or prescriptive land use regulations. Other regulations may be created as citizens voice their concerns about the removal of individual trees or the cutting of multiple trees on private property. These regulations may exempt certain forestry practices or restrict the extent to which forestry can be conducted. This Woodland Owner Notes publication examines tree protection regulations, zoning, and other ordinances. Guidance is offered on how to practice forestry under existing regulations and on how involvement in the community can retain forestry as viable land use.

Survey Shows Prolific Spread of Predator Beetle, Giving More Hope for Western NC Hemlocks

For the past 20 years, it has been widely accepted that one of the only effective ways to manage hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) infestation is through chemical control. Chemical treatments can be expensive and labor-intensive. However, a less-costly, broader area biological control solution is on the horizon--a small lady beetle from the Pacific Northwest that's been hard at work gobbling HWA since it began being released in western North Carolina 17 years ago. Cooperative Extension conducted a field sampling survey in western North Carolina in 2021 that shows the rate of spread of the HWA predator, Laricobius nigrinus, may be significantly faster than previous research predicted.

NC Arbor Day - March 18th

Nationally, Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday of April. However, most states observe a separate Arbor Day on a date of their choosing in accordance with the best tree-planting times. In North Carolina, we celebrate Arbor Day on the first Friday following March 15. This year, NC Arbor Day falls on Friday, March 18. Arbor Day is all about giving thanks to your trees.

Be on the lookout this month for suggestions on the many ways you can celebrate NC Arbor Day. Be sure to follow our Facebook and Twitter for a virtual NC Arbor Day celebration all week long with our fellow NC Forestry friends. Keep an eye on the hashtag, #NCForestsUnited for lots of resources!
