Invasive Insects in North Carolina
Yellow-Legged Hornet
The yellow-legged hornet has been found in NC for the first time in Union County. This invasive species is a predator known to kill honeybees, making this find bad news for our bees and beekeepers. If you see it, report it to the NCDA&CS! Read the press release »

September 3rd, 2026 (Th), 10 AM - 12 PM ET, Adventure Scientists Butternut Tree ID Field Day. The native butternut (or white walnut) is facing a quiet crisis due to a lethal canker disease. Finding healthy, resilient trees in our forests is the first step toward saving the species—and that’s where you come in! At this field day, you’ll get your boots on the ground to: Learn how to spot and identify butternut trees in the wild, understand how to assess tree health and look for signs of genetic resilience, and practice the data-gathering techniques used by citizen scientists to help researchers map and protect these rare trees. October 14th, 2026 (W), 1 - 2 PM ET, Herbicide Symptomology in Forest Settings Webinar. Herbicides are a commonly used tool to manage unwanted vegetation across urban and forested landscapes. However, if used improperly or under the wrong conditions, damage can occur to non-target species causing a wide variety of symptoms including abnormal growth patterns, leaf discoloration, wilt, epicormic sprouting, and dieback. But what can be done about herbicide damage and how can it be best recognized or diagnosed? Join ForestHer NC at Fisher Farm in Davidson, NC for an in-person workshop on the critical role standing dead trees or “snags” play in providing vital wildlife habitat and supporting forest biodiversity. Learn how snags support wildlife as well as how to create them on your own property. Participants will get hands-on experience selecting ideal snag trees and various methods for creating them. October 21-22nd, 2026 (W-Th), 8:30 AM - 4 PM ET, Forest Landowner Conference. Join the Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project for this conference in Rocky Mount, NC. The goal is to equip forest landowners with the knowledge and resources needed to achieve their forest management goals. The agenda for this year's conference includes: agroforestry; new and potential markets; estate planning and heirs' property guidance; a panel discussion among natural resource and conservation experts; and engagement with exhibitors from state and federal agencies, the forestry industry, attorneys and others.
