Braiding Indigenous and Western Knowledge for Climate-Adapted Forests
North American forests are experiencing unprecedented challenges due
to extreme wildfires, pathogen and insect outbreaks, heat stress, drought, rapid development, and invasive species. Exacerbated by climate change, these threats collectively diminish cultural values, economic values, and habitat. Contemporary and historical management, including a long legacy of fire exclusion in many sites, are root causes of current forest conditions. As authors consider the importance of future forests, they acknowledge the influential past, present, and future role of Indigenous Peoples and their knowledge in shaping forest ecosystems, in combination with Western science for recommendations to restore resilience to our nation’s forests.

The Woman Landowner Academy Many women find themselves owning land
unexpectedly, without the tools and knowledge for doing what's best for the land and their family. The Woman Landowner Academy is a six-week program that meets every Tuesday at 11:30am EST starting July 16th and ending August 20th, 2024. It is meant to provide you with all your landowner foundational needs. You'll get the tools and resources to ask the right questions, find the right resources, and have the right plans developed for your land and your goals.

June 15th, 2024 (Sat), 9:30 - 4 PM ET, Trees and Me! Project Learning Tree for Early Childhood Educators. Join other early childhood classroom and nonformal educators at the NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, NC as we explore activities in the newly released Project Learning Tree Trees and Me: Activities for Exploring Nature with Young Children activity guide. June 21st, 2024 (F), 8:30 - 3:30 PM ET, Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Workshop. 9 AM - 3 PM ET, Heirs Property Summit (Union County). Attend our hands-on, practical workshop about heirs property in Monroe, NC! Learn about the origin and history of heirs property and estate planning and legal strategies to secure their land. Come to connect with resources and other technical assistance including some potential opportunities to listen from a panel who are dealing with heirs issues.

July 25th, 2024 (Th), 8 AM - 5 PM ET, 2024 Youth STEAM Summit. Meet and mingle with STEAM professionals who received their academic degrees at North Carolina institutions. Dive into other STEAM-related topics and careers like natural resources and water quality. All this, door prizes and more during this full day of activities and learning for rising 9th- to 12th-grade students, their parents, school counselors, educators and youth leaders. Exhibitors will include natural resources and agricultural agencies, STEM vendors, forestry companies, and
colleges and universities. Lunch and refreshments provided free of charge. At the end of the day, registered students can spend up to 90 minutes (at no cost!) enjoying the Rocky Mount Event Center's recreation area featuring an arcade, a rope course and an indoor rock climbing wall! If you own forested property or are interested in forest ownership in the mountains of North Carolina, this workshop will provide you with essential knowledge on a variety of forestry and wildlife topics that you can apply to your forest. You will learn about current issues impacting our forests and practices you can implement to improve and keep your forest for generations. You can choose from a wide selection of topics including forest farming, basic forestry terms, wildlife, forest succession, and private land recreation. Registration is $25.
