Costs & Trends of Southern Forest Practices 2024
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System has published its Costs & Trends of Southern Forestry Practices of 2024 across three physiographic regions in the South: the Southern Coastal Plain, Northern Coastal Plain, and Piedmont. Understanding the cost of forestry practices helps forest landowners and managers with financial planning, budgeting decisions, and evaluating profitability and returns. Find values on mechanical site preparation, planting, prescribed burning, chemical application, fertilization, timber cruising, and custodial management.

Elm Zigzag Sawfly Spreading Fast, Now Feeding on Zelkova Trees
Researchers have found that the elm zigzag sawfly is moving across North America faster than expected, with detections in 14 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces since 2020. It is suggested that long-distance hitchhiking via cacoons attached to vehicles and wood products, and that the populations are entirely female and reproduce without mating, are the cause for their rapid spread. Additionally, we now know they will feed on Japanese zelkova trees, a popular urban planting, after previously thinking elms were their only host.

Documentary Film: Young Fires
Our Extension Specialist, Dr. Jennifer Fawcett; Extension Associate, Sarah Cain; and multiple NC State students are featured in a Suncoast Emmy-nominated documentary film, Young Fires by Magic Kumquat Productions. January 13th, 2026 (Tu), 9 AM - 3:30 PM ET, Project Learning Tree K-8 Explore Your Environment Workshop at Belmont Abbey College. Join preservice teachers, K-8 classroom and nonformal educators at the Belmont Abbey College Sacred Heart Campus in Belmont, NC as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide. Register by Wednesday, January 7 at 5pm for $20 on the PLT Belmont Abbey College event page.
January 31st, 2026 (Sat), 10 AM - 4:30 PM ET, Project Learning Tree: Trees in Our Community Workshop. Join preservice teachers, K-8 classroom and nonformal educators at the Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch Library in Greensboro, NC as we explore activities in the the Explore Your Environment Guide & Teaching with i-Tree. In addition to these two activity guides, workshop participants will be provided lunch and receive classroom materials including a Biltmore Stick, Common Trees of North Carolina field guide, and a copy of the Journeys of Black Professionals in Green Careers guide, and more! Register by Friday, January 23 at 5pm for $10 on the PLT Kathleen Clay event page.
February 9th, 2026 (M), 9 AM - 4 PM ET, Trees and Me! Early Childhood Project Learning Tree Workshop. Join other early childhood classroom and nonformal educators in Columbia, NC as we explore activities Project Learning Tree's Trees and Me: Activities for Exploring Nature with Young Children activity guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of the guide. This workshop is part of the Eastern 4-H Center's annual EE Week. Lunch is provided. Register for $22 by January 30th at 5pm on the Eastern 4H Center event form.
February 11th, 2026 (W), 1 - 2 PM ET, An Overview of Timber Taxes Webinar. Understanding both the forestry-specific provisions and the general tax rules that affect your management activities can significantly reduce your overall tax liability through strategic planning. But tax planning becomes even more critical when a natural disaster strikes. Storms, wildfires, and other catastrophic events can damage or destroy timber, and the tax implications of that loss can be complex. In this webinar, Dr. Yanshu Li will provide an overview of timber taxation, with a special focus on how natural disaster-related timber damage, losses, and recovery efforts are treated under current tax law.
