North Carolina on Alert as Pine Beetles Devastate Forests in Other Southern States
"An old nemesis of North Carolina's pine forests is having a resurgence in other Southeastern states as southern pine beetle outbreaks are decimating forest stands in parts of South Carolina and several Gulf Coast states. According to maps prepared by the U.S. Forest Service, counties around Wilmington are some of the most at-risk areas when the next beetle outbreak occurs in the Tar Heel State."

Growing Christmas Trees for the Future Project
The NC State Christmas Tree Genetics Program has spent decades working to develop “elite” Fraser fir trees capable of withstanding these climate-related impacts. Now the program is one step closer to achieving its goal thanks to a nearly $7.5 million, four-year grant awarded by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Ultimately, the project will increase national and international competitiveness, improve consumer outlook regarding industry sustainability and reduce the impact of economic losses annually due to climate, pest and pathogen challenges.

Lights Out for Fall Migration
During migration (fall migration is September 10 - November 30), millions of birds pass through North Carolina, often flying at night. Many nocturnal migrants that fly over urban centers are attracted to building lights which can cause them to become disoriented, fatigued, and ultimately collide into buildings. Homeowners can help make the skies darker by turning off all lights at night.

October 23rd, 2024 (W), 1 - 2 PM ET, Coastal Forests as Sentinels of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise. Along the southeastern US coast, it is becoming more and more common to see large patches of dead or dying trees where healthy forests used to be. These areas are called ghost forests, and they have been recorded since at least the 1920’s. Ghost forests can be found on the Atlantic coast from New Jersey to Texas and as climate change persists, ghost forests are expected to become a more prevalent sight. But what causes this mass death of once healthy forests? What are the ecosystem impacts and can anything be done to save the trees? In this webinar, Dr. Marcelo Ardón will answer all these questions and more as he explains ghost forests and what causes them. Learn more on the Forestry Webinars event page.
