Pam Jordan Receives Statewide Award
Pam Jordan, Administrative Officer for Cooperative Extension, received the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Administrative Professionals Association (NCCEAPA) in September at their state conference in Asheville. Pam won the North Central District Award and was ultimately selected as the statewide winner of the Distinguished Service Award. Pam received further recognition from the Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Monday, October 14 with her entire family in attendance. The award recognizes outstanding leadership, service, and ethics and is selected based on outstanding contributions through excellent administrative management, professionalism, innovation, customer service, advancement of skills and knowledge, active involvement in the NCCEAPA, and projecting a positive image of Cooperative Extension and the county office to clientele and community partners. Her nomination was supported by the entire office and stated “Pam Jordan is a remarkable colleague and leader among staff. She is dedicated to her profession and embodies the spirit of our work in Cooperative Extension.” Congratulations Pam!

by Duke University
Patience Mukelebai, Welcome Baby Program Manager, and Venessa Diaz, WB Office Assistant, were both recognized by Duke University at its September 14 along with other local heroes as part of its annual Durham Day football game. Duke Football and Duke University celebrated the accomplishments of Durham workers and the partnership between Duke University and the Durham community. Congratulations Patience and Venessa!
Welcome Baby Declares
Their First Annual Socktember a Success!
As we approach the fall and winter months, families often face the challenge of updating clothing and accessories for their little ones as the weather gets cooler. To help ease this burden, Welcome Baby organized its first Annual Socktember sock drive, inviting the community to donate and host mini-drives throughout Durham.

We are excited to share that our efforts paid off! In September alone, our dedicated volunteers tagged over 1,500 pairs of socks from general donations to our Giving Closet. We were especially grateful for the support from local agencies who hosted their own community drives:

  • The Moose Lodge donated an incredible 1,293 pairs of socks.
  • Carolina Arbors contributed 734 pairs.
  • Yates Baptist Child Development Center also joined the effort, collecting an impressive amount.

Will these donations last through the winter? Based on our estimates, if we maintain our current number of children served, these socks should last until the end of January. However, it’s important to remember that Welcome Baby distributes socks year-round, to keep children’s feet comfortable while wearing tennis shoes.

We encourage you to keep the sock donations coming throughout the year! Consider hosting a drive for our second Annual Socktember event in 2025 to continue supporting families in need. Together, we can make a significant impact in our community!
Thank you for your generosity and support!

News You Can Use

Did you know...
that October is Leave the Leaves Month? This is a great time to rethink traditional fall yard clean-up by leaving fallen leaves in place, or at least on your property, instead of bagging them up and sending them to the landfill. By leaving the leaves you can help nourish your garden and provide valuable habitat for fireflies and other beneficial and beautiful insects.
