Keeping the Land: Succession Planning for Landowners

Intergenerational land transfer depends on the ability of families to work together to find the best solution for their situation. Differences among family members in values, goals, and critical skills can often lead to disaster. This is where early succession planning can pay big dividends. Succession planning is the human side of estate planning. This article and the related worksheets describe strategies that will assist landowners in assuring successful intergeneration transfer of land, wealth, and assets from one generation to the next. Understanding and building awareness of the key challenges that face land owners engaged in forestry and agriculture and motivating families to address these challenges are the focus.

Emerald Ash Borer Detections

The N.C. Forest Service has deemed five new counties positive for the emerald ash borer (EAB). Newly impacted counties are Anson, Bertie, Duplin, Martin and Sampson, bringing the number of counties in the state where the tree-killing insect has been detected to 76 out of 100.

Successes from the fiscal year 2023 (October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023) translate to positive outcomes for local economies, national defense, rare species, recreation, forest resiliency, wildfire risk, clean air and water, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation.

Laurel Wilt Detections

The N.C. Forest Service has confirmed that laurel wilt, a devastating disease of redbay and other plants in the laurel family, has been detected on private property in the southwestern corner of Pamlico County, bringing the number of counties where the tree-killing disease has been detected to 19.

July 16th, 2024 (Tu), 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM ET, The Woman Landowner Academy. July 17th, 2024 (W), 9 AM - 3 PM ET, Heirs Property Summit (Union County). Attend our hands-on, practical workshop about heirs property in Monroe, NC! Learn about the origin and history of heirs property and estate planning and legal strategies to secure their land. Come to connect with resources and other technical assistance including some potential opportunities to listen from a panel who are dealing with heirs issues. July 18th, 2024 (Th), 9 AM - 12 PM ET, Summer Tree ID Workshop. Do you ever wonder what trees and plants are around you when you are walking through the forest? Join us on a hike in Stone Mountain State Park and we will help you get acquainted with the flora you see during the summer while hiking in the mountains of NC. We will follow the Widow’s Creek Trail as it passes through different forest types and explore how forests establish themselves on the terrain. Cost is $10. Register by July 11th on the Tree ID Sign-up form.

July 25th, 2024 (Th), 8 AM - 5 PM ET, 2024 Youth STEAM Summit. Meet and mingle with STEAM professionals who received their academic degrees at North Carolina institutions. Dive into other STEAM-related topics and careers like natural resources and water quality. All this, door prizes and more during this full day of activities and learning for rising 9th- to 12th-grade students, their parents, school counselors, educators and youth leaders. Exhibitors will include natural resources and agricultural agencies, STEM vendors, forestry companies, and colleges and universities. Lunch and refreshments provided free of charge. At the end of the day, registered students can spend up to 90 minutes (at no cost!) enjoying the Rocky Mount Event Center's recreation area featuring an arcade, a rope course and an indoor rock climbing wall! August 8th, 2024 (Th), 9:30 AM - 4 PM ET, Project Learning Tree: Explore Your Environment K-8 Workshop. Join classroom and nonformal educators at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery in Fuquay-Varina, NC as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide which includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide which includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. September 7th, 2024 (Sat), 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM ET, Forestry Landowner Summit. If you own forested property or are interested in forest ownership in the mountains of North Carolina, this workshop will provide you with essential knowledge on a variety of forestry and wildlife topics that you can apply to your forest. You will learn about current issues impacting our forests and practices you can implement to improve and keep your forest for generations. You can choose from a wide selection of topics including forest farming, basic forestry terms, wildlife, forest succession, and private land recreation. Registration is $25.
