How to be 'FloodWise'

Excess water and floods from major storm events can be very damaging to cropland and forestland. Nature-based solutions can help farmers and foresters be 'FloodWise' to reduce the impact of flooding in their community by collecting and storing water on farm and forest lands and reducing rapid downstream flooding by releasing storm flow naturally or through soft engineered structures.

This website, "Forests and Farms Are Good for North Carolina", provides outreach and evidence-based knowledge to landowners of eastern forests and farms in proximity to military installations and ranges. 2023 is the NC Year of the Trail! 2023 NC Year of the Trail celebrates our vast network of trails, greenways, and blueways which showcase our diverse landscapes. NC Year of the Trail is the largest statewide celebration of trails and outdoor recreation in North Carolina history. So get outdoors and explore local trails near you this new year!

Coming Events of Interest to Woodland Owners

January 1, 2023 (Sun), All Day, NC First Day Outdoors.
NC First Day Outdoors invites everyone in North Carolina to get outside and try a trail to kick off the new year. Look for organized events or find your own trail to explore! Check out the 25+ NC First Day Outdoors events planned across the state on the Year of the Trail event page!

January 9, 2023 (M), 9 AM - 3:30 PM ET, Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Workshop @ Belmont Abbey College. Join preservice teachers, K-8 classroom and nonformal educators at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC as we explore activities in the newly released Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide that includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. January 28, 2023 (Sat), 9 AM - 4 PM ET, Project Learning Tree Early Childhood Workshop @ Blue Jay Point County Park.
Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators at Blue Jay Point County Park in Raleigh, NC as we explore activities in the newly released Project Learning Tree Trees and Me Early Childhood activity guide and the Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. February 20-March 3rd, 2023 (M-Fri), 6th Women-in-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchange.
The 6th Women-in-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (WTREX) was recently announced. This two-week training exchange is designed to increase diversity in the talent pool of fire. The training exchange engages all genders in building a support network for female fire practitioners working to advance their leadership in wildland fire management. Though WTREX has a focus on women in fire, people of all backgrounds, genders, and professional affiliations are encouraged to apply. The 6th WTREX is planned for February 20th-March 3rd, 2023, in southeastern North Carolina. Applications are closed. Visit the NC WTREX event page for additional information.

eFire This interactive site allows you to choose your own eFIRE experience! Become virtually immersed in a prescribed burn, learn why and how burns are conducted, read the provided resources, and/or hear from the multiple types of people who use prescribed fire as a land management tool!

Introduction to Southeastern Prescribed Fire This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental basics of prescribed burning in Southeastern forested ecosystems.

Woodland Stewardship YouTube Channel This channel features webinars and other forestry-related videos.

Southern Fire Exchange YouTube Channel The Southern Fire Exchange (SFE) is a regional program for fire science delivery in the Southeast, funded by the Joint Fire Science Program.

Forest Farming YouTube Channel This channel features videos on medicinal herbs and other crops that can be cultivated under the forest canopy.
