News You Can Use

NC Poultry Declared HPAI Free
North Carolina poultry was declared Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza free by the World Organization for Animal Health in April, allowing international exports to resume for the state.
Poultry producers, including backyard poultry owners, are still encouraged to practice strict biosecurity measures on their farm. We are only about three or four months away from the fall migration of wild birds, and that will bring another reservoir of HPAI to North Carolina. As always, keep contact between domestic poultry and wild birds to a minimum.

Electronic Ear Tag Requirements for Cattle
In April, the United States and North Carolina Departments of Agriculture released new requirements for RFID/EID ear tags in cattle.  Not all cattle are required to have tags.

What are These New Tags, and When are They Required?

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Electronic Identification (EID) tags provide information on where cattle originate from to assist veterinarians with traceability in the event of a disease outbreak.
These ear tags are required for sexually intact cattle (bulls, cows, and heifers) over eighteen months of age being sold outside of North Carolina, or crossing state lines, and all dairy cattle. Cattle used for shows, rodeos, and other events are also required to have a RFID/EID tag if they will be crossing state lines.

Where Do I Get These Tags?

In order to get 100 free tags and tagger, producers must have a Premise Identification Number (PIN). Get your PIN by completing the form linked below.
With that number in hand, contact North Carolina State Veterinarian, Michael Martin at: 919-707-3250 or michael.martin@ncagr.gov.
Tags can also be purchased through a number of different manufacturers.

If you have any questions about the new RFID/EID regulations, please contact Alex Kissinger at akissin@ncsu.edu or (919) 245-2051.

Questions About Your Cattle?
From North Carolina Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) practices to questions about cattle reproduction, we're here to help. Contact Alex Kissinger (akissin@ncsu.edu or (919) 245-2051) with your questions, and keep an eye on this space to hear about upcoming trainings and opportunities.

Useful Resources

Health and Safety for Specialty Crops Mini-Grant Program
The NC Agromedicine Institute continues to have funds to reimburse specialty crop producers for health and safety improvements on their farms (please see attached). Currently maximum out of pocket expenditure for producers is $3500 with maximum reimbursement of 70% or $2450. Participants are  eligible to receive free health and safety training of their choice.

Interested in Transitioning to Organic?
Before crops can be certified organic, farmers must carefully manage their land without using prohibited inputs like synthetic pesticides for 36 months. During this transition period and during the first years after certification, farmers often face many technical and market challenges. The Organic Transition Initiative (OTI) is a $300 million multi-agency USDA effort to support this transition and build and strengthen organic markets.

Visit NC Farms
The Visit NC Farms App is a statewide mobile marketing tool that connects consumers to local foods and farmers in
their community. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services designed the app to drive
traffic to local farms and local-food providers. The app promotes local agritourism, farmers’ markets, and other agriculture-related businesses.
