Duff During a Controlled Burn
Duff is a layer of partially decayed organic material, and is a normal part of the forest floor. But when fire has been absent for too long, it can build up to levels that increase risks associated with prescribed fire.
Understanding what duff is, how it behaves, and how to incorporate it into your plans is important for any landowner looking to safely reintroduce fire into long-unburned land.

America’s Longleaf Restoration Initiative 2025 Range-wide Accomplishment Report
America’s Longleaf Restoration Initiative has announced the release of the 2025 Range-wide Accomplishment Report!
The highlights? America’s Longleaf partners:
- Planted 94,797 acres of new longleaf pine
- Protected a record 80,817 acres long-term through acquisitions and easements
- Applied prescribed fire to over 1.5 million acres
- Performed maintenance activities on 221,292 acres
- Applied silvicultural activities to 12,707 acres to convert existing forestland to longleaf-dominant forests

2026 Second Quarter Standing Timber Price Report
The 2nd quarter standing timber price report for 2026 is now available! Stumpage price trends were variable, with pine and oak sawtimber seeing a slight increase, pine pulpwood and chip-n-saw seeing notable decreases, and hardwood pulpwood and mixed hardwood sawtimber seeing a slight decrease since the 1st quarter of 2026.

Finding healthy, resilient trees in our forests is the first step toward saving the species—and that’s where you come in! At this field day, you’ll get your boots on the ground to: Learn how to spot and identify butternut trees in the wild, understand how to assess tree health and look for signs of genetic resilience, and practice the data-gathering techniques used by citizen scientists to help researchers map and protect these rare trees.
