USDA to Strengthen the Timber Products Economy

Exciting news for the timber industry! The "USDA will fund $33.7 million in projects to boost the timber products economy and encourage forest management. This investment will reduce wildfire risk, sustain existing jobs, and create new economic opportunities in tribal and economically disadvantaged communities." This investment is especially promising for woodland owners.

Is Allergy Season Getting Worse?

The timing of pollen production in the U.S. varies based on temperature, region and type of plant. In North Carolina and other states across the Southeast, trees and grasses typically produce pollen between March and June, while ragweed produces pollen between August and November. This spring, trees began producing pollen about three weeks earlier than usual, in mid to late February, due to a mild winter and an early warming trend. Invasive Insect Activity Is Heating Up. See Them? Report Them!

The warm weather seems to be here to stay and with that, last year’s new invasive insect arrivals are this year’s pests to watch for. Both the spotted lanternfly and elm zigzag sawfly have recently emerged in North Carolina and we need you on the lookout for them! If you see them, report them!

Decline in First Quarter 2023 Timber Prices

North Carolina average standing timber prices decreased across all major pine and hardwood products in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter of 2022. The decline in prices was reflective of the impact on demand that was hindered by the economic conditions that negatively impact most forest product markets.

May 4th, 2023 (Th), 5 - 8 PM ET, Learn & Burn in Moore County. Join the Sandhills Prescribed Burn Association and ForestHer NC for an opportunity learn about burning in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. *The current burn date is May 4 with May 5 and 6 as backup. May 25th, 2023 (Th), 12 - 1 PM ET, NC Tree Farm Webinar - An Update on State and Federal Regulation of Drainage and Wetlands. Do you have creeks, streams or ditches on your Tree Farm? If so, do you know the federal and state laws and regulations that impact what you can do in and around them? This webinar will provide an overview of recent federal regulations on land disturbances impacting waters of the United States as well as an overview of state regulatory requirements and common law claims regarding drainage. May 30th, 2023 (Tu), 1 - 2 PM ET, North Carolina Forest Health Update Webinar. This webinar is being offered as a service to the forestry community by the North Carolina Board of Registration for Foresters. It will consist of a summary of major forest health occurrences throughout the state from the previous year as detailed in North Carolina’s annual Forest Health Highlights Report. Forest impacts described include native and non-native invasive pests as well as abiotic factors. Information will be presented by the North Carolina Forest Service Forest Health Program and will be delivered from both a regional and statewide perspective. June 21st, 2023 (W), 8:30 AM - 12 PM ET, Timber Income and Expenses: Business or Investor Income Tax Reporting? What a Tax Professional Needs to Know. Combining lecture, example problems, discussion and questions, this half-day workshop is appropriate for all levels of experience. Discussion will address timber tax issues, including: What is timber for income tax purposes?, Basis, Reporting of income: business versus investor, Expense deduction: business versus investor, Form T, Like-kind exchange, Conservation easements, Carbon credits, and Property tax considerations. You will take home a valuable workbook with detailed examples and problems. No advanced preparation is required and there are no prerequisites for this course. Cost: $150. June 22nd, 2023 (Th), 10 AM - 3 PM ET, ForestHer NC: Piedmont Region Gathering. All about Pollinators! Join ForestHer NC for our 2023 Piedmont Region Gathering! As this year's focus is All About Pollinators!, we will be visiting the Cooperative Extension's Pollinator Paradise Demo Garden and talking about pollinators and forests.
