Economic Contribution of the Forest Sector in North Carolina, 2020

The year 2020 was the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, which created significant challenges across all aspects of the forest sector including supply chains, labor conditions, and transportation. Economic contribution analysis suggests that in 2020, the pandemic had substantial effects on the forest sector in North Carolina. Biological Control of Emerald Ash Borer in North Carolina

Currently, the leading strategy for managing EAB in forests is biological control (also called “biocontrol”). Biological control programs involve controlling pest populations by using natural enemies that attack it. The EAB biological control program uses classical biological control which involves the importation, release, and establishment of natural enemies that attack a non-native pest in its native range and help suppress its numbers below a damaging level. Starting in 2013, North Carolina releases parasitoid wasps to control EAB populations. Current research at NC State is studying previous release sites in North Carolina to see whether the wasp species that were released have successfully established and are still present at these sites.

Beech Bark Disease

Beech bark disease (BBD) is a serious disease that results from a combination of feeding damage by a scale insect and cankers caused by a fungal pathogen. It occurs when the non-native beech scale, Cryptococcus fagisuga, feeds on beech trees and creates fissures in the bark, allowing Neonectria fungi to enter the tree. These fungi kill the inner bark tissue, forming cankers which can coalesce and girdle the tree, leading to death.

Insect Pests and Diseases of Dog Woods in North Carolina

Dogwoods are a beloved tree in North Carolina. The showy white flowers of flowering dogwood (Benthamidia florida) are a welcome sign of spring and became the state flower in 1941. Many choose to plant dogwoods in their landscapes, so recognizing dogwood pests and having accessible management resources are important in managing this beautiful landscape or forest tree.
