Filing your taxes can be a daunting task especially if you are a private forest landowner trying to navigate the many provisions and rules that may or may not apply to your woodlands. NC Working Lands Website: Forests and Farms are Good for North Carolina

A new NC Working Lands Website is now available! This website, "Forests and Farms Are Good for North Carolina", provides outreach and evidence-based knowledge to landowners of eastern forests and farms in proximity to military installations and ranges. Get information ranging from wildlife stewardship on working forests & farms to innovative land management strategies and working lands tourism. The Woman Landowner Symposium: Empowered Ownership

The Woman Landowner Symposium is a bi-annual national-level event hosted and organized by Land & Ladies. This national woman landowners event's purpose is to empower women with the confidence to take hold of their landownership and create an atmosphere for women to connect with one another. The 1.5-day event in Brunswick, GA is comprised of natural resource expert general sessions, breakout workshop opportunities, and a social reception. Attend in-person or virtually!

Coming Events of Interest to Woodland Owners

February 2, 2023 (Th), 1-2 PM ET, Forest History Society: Conserving American Forests With Carbon Revenues- with Sarah Ford and Jessica Bakowski of Forest Carbon Works. Do you have a basic understanding of forest carbon markets and are ready to learn how carbon revenues could help conserve American forests? If so, join the Forest History Society for “Conserving American Forests With Carbon Revenues.” In it, you’ll learn about forest conservation, climate mitigation, and legacy building, and then about carbon program options for U.S. landowners, no matter how large your property is. This webinar has been approved for 1 hour of CFE credit in Cat. 1. Get more information and register on the FHS event page.

February 6-10, 2023 (M-F), F.L.A.M.E. Week at Turnbull Creek Educational State Forest. Join N.C. Forest Service staff and partners for a series of online webinars to explore and learn about wildfire and prescribed fire. Over a period of four days, staff and participants will discuss prescribed burning, using weather forecasts and modeling to anticipate wildfire activity, forest protection burning laws and wildfire risk in North Carolina. On the fifth day, educators can register to participate in a Project Learning Tree workshop at Turnbull Creek Educational State Forest. Participants in this workshop will visit fire-maintained areas of the forest and observe a live prescribed burn, weather permitting. To attend any portion of the FLAME Week event schedule, registration is required. Spots are limited so register early. Register and get more information on the NC Forest Service event page.

February 15, 2023 (W), 9 AM - 4 PM ET, Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Workshop @ Eastern 4-H Center. Join preservice teachers, K-8 classroom and nonformal educators at the Eastern 4-H Center in Columbia, NC as they explore activities in the newly released Project Learning Tree Explore Your Environment K-8 Activity Guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with a copy of this guide that includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people’s awareness and knowledge about their environment. Registration closes Friday, February 3rd. Registration costs $20. Get more information and register in advance on the PLT event page.

February 23-24, 2023 (Th-F), Land & Ladies: The Woman Landowner Symposium. Join other women landowners for this bi-annual symposium in Brunswick, GA. February 20-March 3rd, 2023 (M-F), 6th Women-in-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchange.
The 6th Women-in-Fire Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (WTREX) was recently announced. This two-week training exchange is designed to increase diversity in the talent pool of fire. The training exchange engages all genders in building a support network for female fire practitioners working to advance their leadership in wildland fire management. Though WTREX has a focus on women in fire, people of all backgrounds, genders, and professional affiliations are encouraged to apply. The 6th WTREX is planned for February 20th-March 3rd, 2023, in southeastern North Carolina. Applications are closed.

March 14th, 2023 (Tu), 8 AM - 4 PM ET, Increasing Participation in USDA's Conservation Reserve Program in N.C. (Wayne County). This free workshop is organized by Roanoke Electric Cooperative's Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project and the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources. The purpose is to increase awareness of and participation in the Conservation Reserve Program. The program's long-term goal is to re-establish valuable land cover to help improve water quality, prevent soil erosion and reduce loss of wildlife habitat. This workshop takes place in Goldsboro, NC. Get more information and register in advance on the Wayne County event page. Register by 6pm on March 3rd.

March 25th, 2023 (Sat), NC Arbor Day Festival. Join us in celebrating NC Arbor Day at John Chavis Memorial Park in Raleigh, NC! This is our first NC Arbor Day celebration in four years. We are excited to resume the celebration with new connections, various entertainers, educators, food trucks, activities, music, tree giveaways, and much much more! Introduction to Southeastern Prescribed Fire This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental basics of prescribed burning in Southeastern forested ecosystems.

Woodland Stewardship YouTube Channel This channel features webinars and other forestry-related videos.

Southern Fire Exchange YouTube Channel The Southern Fire Exchange (SFE) is a regional program for fire science delivery in the Southeast, funded by the Joint Fire Science Program.
